Job Description

Are you a MA graduate, or a current MPhil/PhD student in Historical Studies with a passion for photography, and feminist history? Birkbeck, University of London, is seeking an Editorial Assistant to support the development of a new anthology on the influential British photographer and activist, Jo Spence.
This is a unique training opportunity to gain hands-on experience in academic publishing. You'll work closely with Professor Patrizia Di Bello and Dr Catherine Grant to list and analyse Jo Spence's output, and then seek and edit contemporary essays contextualising the material and highlighting its relevance to the present.
As Editorial Assistant you will:

  • Administer submissions and track editorial progress
  • Liaise with editors, authors, and copyright holders
  • Format and desk-edit materials to house style
  • Coordinate editorial meetings and take minutes
  • Use platforms like SharePoint, Dropbox, and Google Docs
  • Ensure timely communication and scheduling.
We're looking for someone who is:
  • Knowledgeable in the history of photography and British feminism
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Excel, and bibliographic tools
  • Organised, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple tasks
  • A clear communicator with excellent time management skills
  • Eager to learn and contribute to a collaborative editorial team.
This opportunity would build on experience as a researcher and a bibliographer, and more generally, your administrative skills.

Salary and benefits
6,682 rising to 7,585 per year (Pro-rated 38,981 to 44,247 per year, FTE). Grade 6 on the College's London Pay Scale which includes a consolidated London Weighting Allowance.

Contract:
Fixed-term, six month contract (subject to renewal if funding obtained), part-time, six hours a week (0.17 FTE), hybrid or remote offered.
