Role Purpose

Responsible for enabling the seamless day-to-day functioning of the Director Education role, and, in particular, helping them manage the British Council\'s interaction with senior internal and external Education stakeholders, including oversight of inward and outward delegations involving senior British Council managers. Working closely with British Council Education colleagues, the postholder will lead on developing and implementingnew processes for better managing our interaction with senior stakeholders.

The role will manage the Education Advisory Group (senior external stakeholders) and the Global Education Steering Group (senior internal stakeholders) including commissioning and quality assuring board papers, taking minutes and supporting the recruitment of new members.

The role also covers the strategic management of international inbound/outbound visits working with the Head of Government Relations (Education) and, stakeholder leads in thein the HE and Schools teams, and commissioning and quality assuring briefings for senior British Council managers. The post-holder will also provide stakeholder management support for key events such as Going Global and Education World Forum.

The postholder will also manage the Director Education\'s diary and travel arrangements.

The role will report to the Head of Government Relations (Education) who is the strategic stakeholder lead for Education, and will support them in aligning stakeholder work in education with wider stakeholder activities across the British Council.

Accountabilities/Responsibilities:

Relationship and Stakeholder Management
  • Manages communications with senior internal and external stakeholders; responding to queries in consultation with others where necessary to ensure they are dealt with efficiently and effectively
  • Supports the establishment of key relationships with the education sector and research base in relation to education and science policy, programmes and partnerships.
  • Ensures that partner feedback is regularly gathered, analysed and acted upon to drive continuous improvements in relationship management.
  • Proactively manages recurring internal and external senior stakeholder meetings, supervising and controlling schedules and deadlines within the team
  • Oversees the Director Education\'s diary and travel (UK and international) with a view to cultivating key relationships.
  • Commission briefings, speeches and documents as required for the Director Education to enable their engagement with stakeholders.
  • Works with British Council education sector and country teams to ensure that they provide, or contribute Education-specfiic content for, briefings and speeches for other SLT and GLT colleagues
  • Oversees a calendar in inward and outbound delegations/visits to ensure Director Education is fully informed of key events and that there is a strong strategic fit for the programme.
Service Delivery
  • Manages the Secretariat for the Education Advisory Group, Global Education Steering Group and other key advisory groups as required. Quality assuring and re-writing board and other important papers as necessary, , working to tight timelines and providing high quality outputs.
  • Commissioning, drafting and quality assuring briefing notes and travel programmes, draft correspondence, reviewing and editing communications.
  • Supports the organisation of the Director of Education\'s programme for major set-piece events such as the Education World Forum, British Council conferences such as Going Global, and other high-profile overseas visits and delegations.
  • Liaises with other British Council teams (eg. Visits) to ensure a coordinated approach
  • Ensures data collection on event delivery that supports accountability, decision-making and learning including on EDI issues
Service improvment
  • Uses digital platforms and technological advancements to improve efficiency, impact and quality of information and communication
  • Identifies and shares examples of process/procedural best practice with appropriate colleagues to drive continuous improvement in the British Council\'s operational capability, efficiency and cost effectiveness.
  • Identify and make recommendations for improvements to processes and ways of working that enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the Education team
Leadership and Management
  • Ensures an effective EDI approach to ensure compliance when selecting venues or speakers for events led by the Directors/Senior Management.
  • Volunteers and contributes to EDI related initiatives, tasks, events, research and publications.
  • Celebrates cultural diversity and seeks to involve others in decision making.
  • Avoids prejudgment in assessing performance and capability of others.
  • Recognises incidents of inappropriate or non-inclusive behaviour.
Requirements of the role:
  • Experience in using technology effectively in the workplace
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of providing effective administrative support
  • Ability to evaluate existing processes and practice and propose more efficient solutions with positive impact
  • Proven capacity as a strong team player with a \'can do\' solutions-focused attitude, and ability to flex to ensure a high standard of delivery
  • Experience of working across different cultures and recognising then addressing any unconscious biases
  • Understands and promotes ethical conduct, and able to ensure that own behaviour and the behaviour of others is consistent with these standards and values of the British Council including those set out in our EDI priorities.
