We are a UK leader in lighter-than-air (LTA) platforms, specialising in airships, tethered aerostats, stratospheric balloons, and the design and manufacture of large-scale commercial inflatable buildings. Our systems support defence, communications, environmental monitoring and commercial operations worldwide.
We're expanding our engineering team and looking for an Electrical Design Engineer with strong experience in high-voltage power systems (~3000 V) and AC/DC conversion for avionics payloads--especially within tethered aerostat applications.
The Role
As an Electrical Design Engineer, you'll be responsible to the Head of Design for designing and delivering complete electrical systems for our next-generation LTA platforms and inflatable structures. You'll work across high-voltage power transmission, mains-level distribution, and low-voltage avionics power, ensuring safe, reliable operation in challenging outdoor and airborne environments.
This is a hands-on, varied, and innovative role that spans concept design, analysis, testing, and field integration.
What You'll Do
Design & develop electrical system architectures for airships, aerostats, tethered platforms, and inflatable building systems. Engineer high-voltage (~3 kV) power delivery through tether systems, including step-down to 230 V AC and low-voltage DC avionics rails. Integrate avionics, sensors, communication payloads, and onboard electronics into LTA platforms. Produce wiring diagrams, load analyses, cable schedules, and harness designs. Lead testing & validation, including insulation, continuity, HV safety checks, and
functional power testing. Support manufacturing, installation, and field deployment activities. Ensure compliance with relevant UK, European, and aerospace electrical standards (BS EN, LV & EMC directives, DO-160 etc.). Contribute to R&D projects focused on efficiency, weight reduction, new materials, and power system innovation.
What We're Looking For
Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering (or equivalent experience). Proven experience with high-voltage electrical systems (1-5 kV ideal). Strong understanding of AC/DC conversion, power electronics, protection systems, and EMC. Experience in aerospace, UAV, LTA systems, or lightweight/mobile platforms (preferred). Skilled in electrical CAD tools (AutoCAD Electrical, Altium, SolidWorks Electrical, etc.). Ability to work collaboratively across mechanical, systems, and production teams. Confident in hands-on testing, troubleshooting, and field integration.
Desirable Experience
Tethered aerostat or winch system power delivery Inflatable/fabric-based structures with embedded electrics Avionics or airborne payload integration Outdoor/harsh-environment electrical design.
Minimum of 5years experience.
