The salary for this role is

56,596 (inclusive of a Specialist Allowance- 6,285)

.

Onsite working is expected for

3 days each week, however, we actively support requests for flexible working.


This role is based at the following site:

Culham, Oxfordshire




This role requires employees to

complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS)

, including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions and possibly a search of open source data.

The Role




The Electrical Services Group, part of the Electrical Engineering Unit, plays a vital role in maintaining the Culham site-wide electrical power distribution network, while also delivering assembly, installation, and testing services to support UKAEA projects and programmes.


We are now seeking a dedicated professional to take the lead on health and safety within the Group, ensuring compliance with legislation, internal procedures, and industry best practice. This will include developing, reviewing, and implementing Safe Systems of Work (SSoW) and maintaining a visible onsite presence to promote a positive and proactive safety culture.


The role also oversees workshop safety across the Unit, ensuring PUWER compliance and consistent standards. You will implement a common safety framework, promote best practices, and drive continuous improvement, making a real impact on safety culture and supporting high-profile engineering projects.

Key Accountabilities:



Lead the creation, implementation, and review of Safe Systems of Work (SSoWs), risk assessments (RAMS), and related safety documentation, ensuring compliance with legislation, UKAEA procedures, and industry standards. Provide guidance, training, and leadership to staff and contractors, supporting inductions, toolbox talks, and routine safety walkabouts to embed a positive safety culture. Oversee on-site adherence to health and safety requirements, investigate incidents and near misses with the Group Leader, and drive corrective and preventive actions. Work with Workshop Supervisors and Managers to implement a common safety framework, ensure compliance with PUWER regulations, and deliver a forward-looking plan for continuous improvement. Liaise with Safety & Health Business Partners, contribute to Unit meetings with safety performance updates, and provide practical support to other Groups and Units within Integrated Engineering as required.

Qualifications

Essential:



NEBOSH General Certificate (or equivalent) in Occupational Health and Safety, or IOSH certification with relevant experience Strong understanding of health and safety legislation. Detail-oriented with a proactive approach to problem-solving. Strong organisational skills and a methodical approach to documentation. Proven experience in developing and implementing Safe Systems of Work.

Desirable:



IOSH membership (TechIOSH or higher). Experience working in an electrical distribution or engineering environment. Electrical qualification or background in electrical engineering/maintenance. Experience working in a high-risk, technical, or research-based environment.
