ROLE POSITIONING AND OBJECTIVES

What are the key objectives and expectations from this role?

To design and develop device system prototypes that use both electrical and mechanical new technology blocks in next generation products, to oversee manufacturing of prototypes to required standards, prepare technical specification documentation, test and evaluate the prototypes, generate test reports and review data to recommend the way forward, root cause analysis and identify next steps so that devices and platforms meet marketing, product development and regulatory criteria.

What is the direct impact of this role on the team or organisation?

This role is responsible for designing, developing and testing the electrical and mechanical components of technology blocks, providing integration teams with viable options that can be utilised in next generation products.

WHAT YOU WILL BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR:
  • To lead electro-mechanical engineering activities to support the development of breakthrough products or technologies.
  • To lead work on prototyping and design verification testing to support design & development of electronic, software, and mechanical designs, support module upgrades, debugging, optimization, cost reduction and quality improvement in new technology block projects, ensuring \xe2\x80\x9cObjectives and Key Results\xe2\x80\x9d requirements are met.
  • To design and deliver appropriate approaches to design verification, prototyping, materials selection and testing. To integrate new technologies into new systems and potential new product development, as well as fault-finding / improvement / enhancement on existing products.
  • To utilise skills and experience in development, electrical testing, assembly and prototyping to assist with the production of multiple device prototypes, contributing towards a finalised solution that meets the project and business requirements and expectations.
  • To support communications with BAT\'s internal teams and development partners to create functional solutions, demonstrating how they satisfy the defined project requirements. To document the learnings and prepare technology block specifications.
  • To work and interact with other skillsets in science and engineering to optimize designs and deliver consumer value, with consideration of manufacturability, cost and quality in parallel.
  • To provide regular project/workstream management updates, tracking progress towards milestones and noting expenditure against budgets
  • To maintain and develop an IP focus, assist with the protection of innovations by secure IP, liaising with the LEX department for patent work.
ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

Experience Required
  • An excellent understanding of device electro-mechanical technology roadmaps/evolution and proposing and designing for future trends and technologies that are relevant to our consumers and markets;
  • Experience in technical engineering roles, possibly derived from one of many different backgrounds, including the tobacco, software, or device engineering industries;
  • An understanding of technology development, and an ability to understand and analyse new ideas;
  • Proficient in CAD (ideally Solidworks Certified, alternatively Catia or UX);
  • Proven track record of innovative problem-solving through iterative prototyping and design verification. Hands-on development of working prototypes through to validation of mid-scale production components;
  • Experience in managing numerous external partners: from initiating technical briefs and requirements, remote problem solving, managing updates and reporting progress to the broader team and leadership;
  • An understanding of the patent landscape, building and protecting IP filings and its importance to the business;
  • Project management and budget management skills and experience would be beneficial ;
Technical / Functional / Leadership Skills Required
  • Inventive, hands-on, pragmatic and passionate about new technologies;
  • Intuitive design background;
  • Practical application of key innovation tools; including: FMEA, critical controls, dimensional reports, tolerance stack analysis, generation of verification test plans, system performance data tracking;
  • Ability to coordinate internal and external resources/capabilities;
  • Knowledge of regulation/compliance;
  • Understanding of project timescales and how the role contributes to the broader R&D innovation pipeline;
  • Ability to work within cross-functional teams, liaising with key internal teams and external partnerships to ensure the most effective use of resource/expertise;
  • Experience in a supervisory position would be beneficial, with a proven ability to guide junior team members, ensuring high quality outputs;
  • Able to develop both individual and team technical capabilities;
Education / Qualifications / Certifications Required
  • Degree-educated in a relevant field of study (i.e. Engineering, Electro-Mechanical Engineering, Electronics, etc)
