Overview of Role
The role is focused on embedded software design and development of Synaptec's advanced sensing and instrumentation system.
Prior experience and confidence in embedded software development for real-time systems will be important.
The principal objectives of the role are:
Design and implement embedded software for high-performance sensing systems
Perform rigorous testing of new features
Work with the team to release new features and products
Assist with the configuration and deployment of customer systems
The Engineer will be closely involved in Synaptec's core product development and testing processes and will be given some autonomy to design and conduct experimental or development activities within the guidance of the team. It is expected that the Engineer will gain invaluable interdisciplinary experience and will take opportunities to develop new skills and input at a growing level to Synaptec's success.
You will report on a day-to-day basis to the Lead Engineer in embedded system team, and will be expected to provide updates to the wider team on technical progress, and to participate in the preparation of reports or presentations to external clients.
This is a full-time post. It is expected that most work will be completed within an office or lab, but with flexibility for remote working. Site visits and short-term working at client or supplier sites may be required, where it is safe to do so.
Essential criteria
The ideal candidate must be able to demonstrate or rapidly develop:
An excellent academic qualification in an engineering, physics, or computer science discipline
2+ years of professional experience in embedded software development.
Strong proficiency in C/C++ for microcontrollers or embedded platforms Experience working with real-time or time-sensitive applications
Familiarity with embedded development workflows, including cross-compilation and debugging
Practical use of version control systems such as Git and GitHub
Experience writing and running unit tests and integration tests for embedded code
Comfort with using lab equipment for basic testing and validation
Self-motivation, proactive attitude, and an ability to work autonomously, efficiently, and rigorously, including the ability to manage own time and workload effectively
Excellent verbal communication skills and attitude, with an ability to convey technical information in clear and simple terms with colleagues and customers
Ability to write clean, well-structured code and clear, well-organised documentation
Willingness and enthusiasm to travel (both in the UK and internationally) to support on-site system installation, testing, and commissioning
Proactive and ambitious in growing own technical and professional expertise
Confidence with both independent responsibility and time management, and collaborative team-working, in a high-technology environment
Differentiating criteria
Familiarity with RTOS or embedded Linux environments
Experience with scripting languages for tooling or test automation (e.g. Python)
Exposure to CI/CD practices for embedded software (e.g. GitHub Actions, Jenkins)
Experience with standard hardware communication protocols such as I2C, SPI, Ethernet, and PCIe
Familiarity with software quality assurance. Familiarity with electronic circuit design, prototyping, and testing
Interest in power systems, signal processing or instrumentation
Familiarity with power system engineering or power system protection
