The Role

We are seeking a committed

Employability Tutor

to lead the delivery of an intensive, short-term employment support and peer mentoring development programme at

HMP High Down

. You will be the sole on-site tutor, supported remotely by a qualified IQA and Bhuku's operational team. You will play a vital role in preparing men in custody for employment, while also supporting the development of trained peer mentors within the prison.

Key Responsibilities

Deliver employability sessions to groups of up to 10 learners, supporting them to develop job search skills, CVs, interview techniques, application form responses, and confidence for release. Deliver accredited training leading to a

Level 1 Peer Recruitment Peer Support Qualification

. Train and support peer mentors, ensuring they can confidently assist other prisoners with employability preparation and support in workshops. Adapt sessions to meet the needs of a diverse prison population including those with SEND, EAL, and neurodiverse profiles. Use trauma-informed and inclusive practices in all delivery, building trust and confidence with learners. Track learner progress and keep accurate, compliant records of attendance, outcomes, and development. Coordinate with prison staff (e.g. OMU, PEF provider, Careers and Resettlement teams) to ensure continuity and relevance of learning. Encourage participation in weekly reflection journals and collect learner feedback to inform quality improvements.
The Programme

Delivery is 3 days per week, on-site at HMP High Down. Each cohort consists of up to 10 learners, with both employment preparation and peer mentoring training included. The tutor is responsible for delivering both components of the programme. The peer mentoring aspect involves providing guidance, coaching, and accredited training, enabling learners to support others. Learners will be supported to produce CVs, interview prep, and other employability outputs. The tutor will work closely with a part-time IQA and will have access to remote management support.
Person Specification

Essential:



Experience delivering employability or life skills training Strong understanding of the barriers faced by people in custody Confident working independently and in a secure environment Ability to manage behaviour positively and promote an inclusive learning environment Organised, reliable, and able to manage paperwork and reporting independently

Desirable:



Recognised teaching/training qualification (e.g. AET Level 3, PTLLS, or above) Experience working in prisons or secure settings Understanding of the Level 1 Peer Mentoring qualification SEND or neurodiversity awareness training Experience working with or training peer mentors
