Job Introduction
We're looking for a data-driven, strategic editorial thinker to join our audience team as Engagement Editor. Working across all our digital platforms, including web, app, Apple News and social media, the right candidate will be data literate, with the ability to translate data insights into effective editorial strategy.
This role is ideal for someone junior looking to make their mark in editorial SEO and is central to executing New Scientist's editorial strategy, helping us to become a truly digital-first publisher.
The right candidate will be responsible for curating and optimizing New Scientist's homepage and digital content to drive user engagement and online growth. They will be comfortable with:
Crafting various headline formats, (eg: article title, homepage title, meta title)
Optimizing for SEO with consideration for New Scientist'sstyle guide.
Building reports using tools like Looker Studio and GA4 to monitor article performance
Using push notifications strategy to maximize reader engagement
Conducting and acting on keyword research

Main Responsibilities
Monitor and report on performance across the homepage, web, app and social channels using tools including Google Analytics 4 and Looker Studio to provide content recommendations and insights for our editorial and leadership teams.
Use Ahrefs, SEMrush, and other SEO tools to identify keyword opportunities, content gaps, and trending topics.
Advise editorial teams on commissioning decisions across web, app, social media, and newsletters, based on SEO insights and audience data.
Collaborate with editors and writers to ensure content is optimized for search and aligned with user intent, including headline writing and keyword research.
Manage technical SEO across WordPress and support improvements in site architecture, internal linking, and page performance.
Track and benchmark competitors' digital strategies to inform content development and distribution.
Person Specification
Required experience
Proven experience in an editorial SEO or engagement role within publishing.
Proficient in GA4, Looker Studio, WordPress, Ahrefs, and SEMrush, with an ability to build and operate reports and dashboards. (Experience with BigQuery preferred but not essential.)
Required skills and behaviours
Demonstrable ability to interpret data and translate it into editorial opportunities.
Excellent communication skills and ability to work with editorial, product, and marketing teams.
