We do this through providing technical leadership and specialist expertise, managing the National Control and Competence Frameworks, facilitating technical growth and lateral learning, and assuring regional delivery.

About the role (External)

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for a highly capable, experienced and motivated civil/geotechnical engineer or engineering geologist to bolster our Network Technical Head (Geotechnics) team in the role of Engineer. With an aptitude in data analytics and geospatial data we are looking for someone who can uncover new insights in earthworks management, which sits at the intersection of railway civil and systems engineering, infrastructure asset management, and research, development and technology.

What does the average day look like?

In this role, you'll be part of a small but high-impact team, shaping how Network Rail manages its extensive and complex earthworks portfolio. Each day, you'll apply your geotechnical expertise to improve slope safety and asset performance across a vast, ageing, and weather-sensitive infrastructure--balancing safety, service reliability, and value for money.

Your work will involve everything from providing technical advice and supporting engineering leadership, to developing national policies, standards, and training materials that guide the discipline. You'll collaborate closely with engineers across regional teams, offering them practical guidance and technical support while also influencing national strategy and standards.

In this role, no two days are the same. One day you could be shaping geotechnical technical standards, the next you might be on site carrying out Engineering Verifications or exploring innovative technologies that transform how assets are managed. You'll play a hands-on role in research and development, turning new ideas into practical solutions, while also using data analytics to uncover trends, manage risks, and guide evidence-based decisions. This role puts you at the cutting edge of geotechnical engineering--where your expertise influences national strategy and delivers real-world impact across a diverse and complex asset base.

This is a role for someone who thrives in a fast-moving environment, is comfortable with technical complexity, and is motivated by the chance to make a national impact.

Essential Criteria

HNC/HND or equivalent qualification or demonstrate equivalent experience (Level 4 / 5)

Substantial experience in a relevant engineering area

Sound knowledge of relevant policies and standards

An understanding of safety management systems and risk assessment techniques

For a full list of the key accountabilities and the essential and desirable criteria, please see the attached Network Rail job description.
