About the Role:
We're looking for an experienced and passionate Engineering Manager to lead our Space & Range teams - high-performing squads delivering cutting-edge software solutions for the core commercial applications that power our retail operations.
Your immediate focus will be on the applications that help our planners design and visualise store layouts using 3D planograms - essential tools that shape how our products appear on shelves across all locations.
In this role, you'll take full ownership of the team's delivery, technical strategy, and people development. You'll work closely with Product and Tech leadership to shape the future of our retail systems and ensure we remain at the forefront of innovation in the space planning domain.
What You'll Be Doing:
Technical Leadership
Drive the evolution of the team's technical platform, ensuring it's scalable, reliable, and aligned with H&B's wider tech vision.
Lead architecture, implementation, and code reviews, with a focus on distributed systems and modern engineering practices.
Stay ahead of industry trends, championing continuous improvement in tools, processes, and standards.
Team & People Leadership
Lead, mentor, and grow a team of engineers and/or engineering managers, supporting their career development and building a culture of ownership and excellence.
Attract, retain, and nurture top engineering talent.
Promote a culture of quality, innovation, and alignment with our EPIC values (Energetic, Pioneering, Inclusive, Committed).
Software Delivery
Partner with Product Managers and Technical Program Managers to deliver clear roadmaps and measurable outcomes.
Lead team-level planning, balancing feature delivery, tech debt management, support, and process improvements.
Ensure strong testing practices and modern CI/CD pipelines underpin all releases.
Collaboration & Communication
Be a go-to technical leader within your domain, building strong relationships across engineering and product teams.
Clearly communicate progress, risks, and plans to stakeholders.
Foster cross-squad collaboration to deliver seamless, integrated solutions.
Key Requirements:
Experience & Technical Skills
3+ years managing engineering teams (typically 8+ engineers), with a track record of delivering high-impact software solutions at scale.
Strong hands-on development background - ideally with JavaScript, Java, or Kotlin.
Deep experience with microservices architecture, containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes), and cloud-native patterns.
Agile/Scrum experience with a DevOps mindset.
Solid understanding of CI/CD, automated testing, and deployment pipelines.
Familiarity with both SQL and NoSQL databases.
A pragmatic problem-solver with strong analytical skills.
