About the Role

At Phoebus Software Limited, we are a client-focused organisation with a culture of Innovation and continuous improvement. As part of our accelerated growth, we are seeking an Engineer Manager to join our team and help meet our current business needs.

If you are an innovator who is excited by working with technology that directly impacts Clients, this is a unique opportunity for you to be involved in the early stages of redesigning the way we deliver products and services to our clients.

An Engineering Manager's mission is to lead, mentor, and support engineering teams in delivering high-quality products while fostering a positive, productive environment. EMs bridge leadership with people management, ensuring teams have the necessary resources, guidance, and opportunities for both professional and personal growth. This role involves aligning engineering efforts with business objectives, driving innovation, maintaining project timelines, and continuously improving processes to achieve operational excellence.

Responsibilities

Coaching (35%)

As a coach, an Engineering Manager plays a pivotal role in nurturing team growth and individual development. Rather than simply overseeing tasks, they guide engineers by offering constructive feedback, removing obstacles, and encouraging continuous learning. By fostering a coaching mindset, EMs help team members enhance problem-solving skills, collaboration, and ownership of their work, driving overall team success and innovation. They identify both individual and team developmental needs, creating career paths in partnership with HR and Functional Leads. Empathy and support for the team's technical and personal challenges is a key mandate.

People Management (35%)

This involves direct management responsibilities such as strategic planning and coordinating with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Ensuring team morale remains high, advocating for the team in business settings, and facilitating the creation of innovative products are core duties. EMs also manage performance reviews, provide career guidance, and ensure team alignment with broader business goals.

Recruiting

(15%)

Recruitment is an important part of the role, including meeting job candidates and evaluating screenings. The best candidates are often passive job seekers, so active recruitment on platforms like LinkedIn and engagement with engineering communities / talent pools is ideal. EMs also help shape the recruitment process and participate in building a talent pipeline.

Administrative (15%)

This includes daily tasks such as handling emails, scheduling meetings, facilitating Agile ceremonies, and conducting individual catch-ups with team members. Ensuring smooth daily operations is essential for maintaining team focus and productivity.

A great EM is a source of calm, who "vacuums up chaos." When entering a room, the team should feel more confident and aligned on their goals when you leave. Absorb stress, reduce uncertainty, and keep the team focused on getting things done.
