Job Summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic Enterprise Infrastructure Engineer with great technical leadership skills and a drive to improve. You will be responsible for supporting the technical teams at Companies House IT Services. You will be user and service focused?ensuring that value is delivered through improvement and automation of technical platforms, delivery pipelines, service, and application support.

We are currently using a hybrid approach to the way we work. The majority of our digital teams are based in our Cardiff head office. Remote/homeworking contracts will only be offered to successful candidates who are not within a commutable distance to our Cardiff office. If you are located within a commutable distance to one our offices, you will receive a hybrid contract.

At Companies House, hybrid working is about achieving an effective balance between working in the office and working from other appropriate locations. Our approach to hybrid working provides opportunities for you to be adaptable in the way you work so that you can achieve a healthy balance between your work and home life. Job desciption

We are looking for a Technical Expert - Enterprise Infrastructure Engineer to join IT services.

You will be responsible for guiding the direction of the technical teams in maintaining and supporting the organisation\'s internal and external facing systems.

You will also be supporting the technical teams in transitioning from a WebOps to a DevOps mindset, helping them develop technical solutions by adopting future technologies and toolsets.

The role will be a technical excellence role to support the other Heads of Professions and their teams within IT Services and will enable Infrastructure Engineering technical oversight (and ownership where necessary) for changes being delivered across all current CH systems, new and future technologies, and correct decisions/input in any re-architecture of our systems in the upcoming years. This role will be key in making sure that this work is consistent across all our services.

Your other responsibilities will include:

  • Identifying risks through problem definition
  • Being flexible and proactive in your approach to build productive working relationships with Heads of Professions and Lead Engineers across Digital, Technology & Data teams
  • Influencing and providing strong support for the Heads of Professions on complex commercial activities with technical input and direction.
  • Providing technical expertise to ensure we meet Operational Continuity, working with the other head of professions to agreed service levels (99.50% availability from 2023/2024 financial years).
  • Being at the forefront in the investigation and resolution of major incidents and security issues. Working with the other heads of professions in IT services to resolve any issues that occur and proactively searching for potential technical solutions with an improvement plan ensuring the right actions are taken to investigate, resolve and anticipate future problems.
  • Working with SecOps to Ensure any security considerations are taken into account across all services for support and development activities.
  • Collaboratively working with the technical and enterprise architecture group to ensure any technology solutions and considerations fit with the digital and enterprise strategies and best practices are followed.
  • To input IT Services needs and requirements into any future architecture or digital strategies
  • Mentoring and leading less experienced members of the team and supporting managers through community collaboration to develop skills across Digital.
  • Working with Commercial, Architects and the HOPS in IT Services to make sure we have the correct software, licenses in place to our future roadmap
  • Working closely with Delivery on any deliveries coming into IT Services are compatible with future technical roadmaps, and has capacity within IT Services
  • Supporting other HOPS in making sure we are moving forward with the move from WebOps to a DevOps and Continuous Integration, Delivery methodology and techniques.
Person specification

This is a new role and is predominantly a technical leadership role, and you will need to be a strong technical leader with the ability to articulate these technical challenges, ensuring a focus on technical delivery and innovation while supporting the current digital estate.

You will also be required to:
  • Show an awareness of the strategic context of your work and why it is important. You can support strategic planning.
  • Have experience in managing technical solutions within a complex landscape of change.
  • Proven Technical background ability to lead on technical deliveries, issues, and on-going work.
  • Be flexible and proactive in your approach to build productive working relationships.
  • Influence, strong support for the Heads of Professions on complex commercial activities with technical input.
  • Must help the technical teams that any solution will ensure Operational Continuity working with the other head of professions to agreed service levels (99.50% availability from 2023/2024 financial years).
  • Be at the forefront in the investigation and resolution of incidents.   • Provide rapid delivery of user centric services whilst focussing on performance.
The nature of this post may occasionally require you to do overtime during the week and at weekends.

We are looking for someone with experience in:

Essential:
  • DevOps and Continuous Integration, Delivery methods and Techniques
  • Cloud Infrastructure technologies:
- Preferably AWS (EC2, Route 53, S3, Cloudtrail, Cloudwatch, IAM, RDS, ECS)
- Terraform, Concourse, Ansible, Git, Docker
- Design, Building & Supporting with best practices.
- Performance Monitoring, Alerting & Tuning. * Data Base Systems/Structures (preferably Oracle & MongoDB).
  • UNIX/Linux operating systems knowledge including shell scripting.
  • Incident/Problem resolution support and root cause analysis
  • Experience of mentoring and technical leadership of less experienced members.
Desirable:
  • Identity management experience/understanding of.
  • Application Server (preferably Weblogic but any considered)
  • Workflow engine (preferably TibCo but any considered)
  • Various programming languages and frameworks - Java (JEE), JavaScript, Spring, Hibernate.
  • Understanding of Adhoc reporting and data management.
