Part of a small team of Estimators and Buyers that are required to support the business in all areas from initial briefing, design deconstruction, estimating, technical assistance and post-production analysis. Estimators are required to think not solely in engineering terms, but also how to deliver the best value to both the customer and the business in order to maximise contribution and how a design concept can be efficiently produced profitably, whilst meeting client expectations.
A brief list of duties is as follows:
Management of costing and enquiry schedule
Active participation in meetings, understanding of markets and what customers are likely to pay for particular items
Concept design analysis and practical engineering solution development, challenge the design concepts created to make sure they meet the brief or could be improved
Utilise existing costing method for in-house manufacture, choosing between the balance of cost, quality, volume/demand and efficiency.
Rapid assessment of a design concept and how it can be constructed to meet a customer expectation
Preparation of costing sheets for sign off.
Purchasing of projects and commodities as required
Daily Tasks
Creation of cost estimates using in-house estimating package
Quick make/buy decisions by consulting Manufacturing Manager and Commercial Director.
Preparation and request of quotation (RFQ's) to third party suppliers where necessary, supplying sketches, drawings and specifications where appropriate
Value engineer product design to maximise profitability
Competitive tender response.
Work with creative designers to provide cost parameters to initial design concepts
Develop initial engineering design concepts to practical solutions that maximise the use of in-house manufacturing capabilities is an advantage.
Apply material and labour costs to initial engineered solution to define product costs
Additional Tasks
Attend technical hand-over meetings sharing cost estimates, quotations and initial engineering design to technical team and purchasing department
Attend client meeting when required to support sales persons in a technical and cost aspect
Cross reference product studio sample against estimated solution to minimise discrepancies.
Post-production analysis with technical team to discuss learnings for future projects
Post-production analysis of product against business targets and profitability
Placement of purchase orders
Budget tracking and post project margin analysis
Other additional business requests
Preferred requirements
Design degree or minimum 2-3 years experience in industry
Good communication skills - verbal and written.
Knowledge of wide variety of materials (timbers, metal, plastics etc)
Knowledge of manufacturing processes ideally mixed medium (timber, metal, plastics etc.)
Sub contract sourcing experience both domestically and globally.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office
Ability to work independently and manage own work load priorities.
Purchasing and negotiation experience
Project management experience is beneficial.
