Estimator
to join our Birmingham based team. This is a key role in ensuring project profitability and securing new business through accurate, detailed, and strategic cost analysis.
Role Overview
The Estimator will be responsible for producing competitive and accurate cost estimates for tenders, small works, and larger projects across all divisions. This involves full lifecycle estimating; from early-stage analysis to bid submission and post-tender support.
Key Responsibilities
Project Analysis
Review blueprints, specifications, and project documentation to assess scope and commercial requirements
Identify cost-influencing variables such as location, timeline, complexity, and risk
Produce labour loading calculations based on tender details
Maintain and update labour recovery rates with annual indexation
Own, update, and manage all commercial templates
Collaborate with operational teams to develop compelling commercial offerings
Lead the development and standardisation of estimating processes and procedures
Maintain a high level of commercial awareness throughout the project lifecycle
Cost Calculation
Accurately calculate costs for materials, labour, plant, transport, and overheads
Secure competitive quotes from subcontractors and suppliers
Account for inflation, exchange rates, and fluctuations in material pricing
Ensure compliance with all relevant health and safety legislation
Bid and Proposal Preparation
Prepare detailed cost summaries, tenders, and bid proposals
Build quotations and margins with full transparency and clarity
Collaborate with sales teams, project managers, engineers, and architects on strategic bid planning
Present and explain proposals to clients, answering technical and commercial queries
Risk Assessment & Value Engineering
Conduct risk analyses and develop mitigation strategies
Recommend cost-optimisation and value engineering options to improve efficiency and profitability
Relationship Management
Build strong relationships with suppliers, subcontractors, clients, and internal stakeholders
Collaborate with design teams and other project contributors
Project Monitoring & Reporting
Monitor project costs to ensure alignment with forecasts
Provide regular reports and commercial analysis to senior management
Candidate Requirements
Proven experience as an Estimator in comparable sectors
Ability to read and understand technical drawings and tender specifications
Strong commercial insight and financial modelling skills
Proficient in Microsoft Office
Solid understanding of contract structure and resource allocation impacts
Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder engagement skills
Strong organisational ability with attention to detail
Self-motivated and proactive, able to manage deadlines and multiple bids
