Brief Description
Location & Coverage
This is a home-based role with travel required across the Eastern Region, covering some of the following areas:

  • London
  • Essex
  • Hertfordshire
  • Cambridgeshire
We are ideally looking for candidates based within these areas to ensure efficient coverage.
About the Role
Network Rail is seeking a Structures Examiner to carry out a range of examinations on railway structures, ensuring compliance with company standards and delivering high-quality, accurate reports. While the primary focus will be Visual Examinations, you may also undertake detailed and additional examinations as required.
Bridge Strike Examiner (BSE) competency is essential for on-call duties. If you do not currently hold this, full training and mentorship will be provided.
This role offers an excellent opportunity to gain full STE4 training and mentorship, supporting your progression to full competence-a perfect step for those looking to build a career in asset management.
About the role (External)
Key responsibilities will include:
Investigate incidents related to structures and provide technical advice when required.
Produce technically compliant reports with minimal rejections, ensuring consistency and accuracy.
Address technical issues identified through report reviews and briefings.
Maintain examiner competence through training, briefing, and assessment.
Ensure all work meets Contract KPI requirements.
Build collaborative relationships to ensure technical requirements are understood and implemented.
Participate in audits, inspections, and trials to improve processes and efficiency.
Support continuous improvement of systems, tools, and processes.
The Role will also include:
Compile and submit condition reports for review by the Examining Engineers team.
Undertake on-call duties, including rapid response to bridge strikes.
Provide safety-critical site support as required.
Conduct reconnaissance visits.
Make immediate safety decisions on-site regarding structural integrity and operational capability, often under pressure.
What We're Looking For
To succeed in this role, you should have:
Strong communication and interpersonal skills at all levels.
Ability to take responsibility and work independently, even under pressure.
Capability to identify and share engineering best practices within the business.
Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to multitask and adapt to changing priorities and deadlines.
Thorough knowledge of technical specifications and standards for structural examinations.
Proven experience in the railway industry, particularly in structures examination, maintenance, or assessment.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
Confidence to work alone with minimal supervision.
Essential Requirement:
A full UK driving licence.
Desirable (Training Provided Where Needed)
Bridge Strike Examiner (BSE)
ONC/HNC level qualification or Technician Engineer (ICE) status.
Previous rail industry experience with knowledge of railway practices.
Controller of Site Safety (CoSS) certification.
Training or awareness in working at height and confined spaces.
