The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Strathclyde is one of the largest and most successful engineering faculties in the UK, and the largest in Scotland. The Department of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Marine Engineering is a world leader in research, with core interests in ship design, stability and safety, marine hydrodynamics, marine structures, ocean engineering, marine engineering, emerging technologies, offshore renewable energy, and alternative fuels. The Department makes a significant contribution to national, European, and international policymaking in marine technology research and its application. It is home to the Kelvin Hydrodynamics Laboratory (KHL)--an experimental research facility featuring a 76-metre towing tank, a 3D compact wave tank, a fully turbulent flow cell, a slime farm, and a structural sub-laboratory.



The Kelvin Hydrodynamics Laboratory is currently seeking to appoint an Experiment Officer at Research Fellow level to contribute to the daily operations of the facility. The successful candidate is expected to work closely with the technical team to manage, design, and deliver teaching, research, and knowledge exchange projects at KHL.



As an Experiment Officer, and under the general guidance of the Laboratory Director and in close collaboration with the KHL technical team, you will manage projects at the lab and ensure the timely delivery of high-quality experimental work. You will develop research objectives and proposals, play a leading role in specific projects or parts of broader programmes, conduct individual and/or collaborative research, contribute to the development of new laboratory testing methods, identify sources of funding, and lead or contribute to the securing of research grants--including drafting proposals and planning for future applications. You will write up research for publication--either independently or with colleagues--and disseminate results through peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations. You will also supervise student projects, advise students, and contribute to teaching by running tutorials and supervising undergraduate (UG), postgraduate taught (PGT), and postgraduate research (PGR) students.



To be considered for the role, you will hold a PhD in a relevant discipline or have significant relevant experience in addition to a relevant degree. You will have research interests aligned with the strategic direction of the Lab/Department/Faculty, a body of published research in high-quality journals, and the ability to develop research proposals and attract funding and research students. A track record of securing grant applications or knowledge exchange consultancy projects as Principal Investigator (PI), Co-Investigator (Co-I), or Research Investigator is also required.



You will demonstrate the ability to plan and organise research programmes to ensure their successful completion. You will have experience in planning and managing workloads, including supervising and delegating tasks. Experience in teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels is essential, as is the ability to work within a dynamic and diverse team environment. You will also have the skills to lead teams and possess excellent interpersonal and communication abilities, including the capacity to listen, engage, persuade, and present complex information in an accessible way to a range of audiences.



While not essential, we welcome applications from candidates who have: membership of relevant Chartered/professional bodies (including the Higher Education Academy), experience of multi/inter-disciplinary research, experience of student assessment activities and/or a track record in knowledge exchange related activities.
