The Children with Additional Needs Service (CANS) is looking for an enthusiastic and engaging person to join a small but established team of family support workers.
This Families First funded project sits within the Disabled Children's Team providing preventative services to children and young people with additional learning needs and their families. This includes giving parents advice around understanding and managing a specific diagnosis (ASD / ADHD); or working one-to-one with children and young people to develop, for example, their independent living skills or strategies to regulate their emotions.
As a Family Support Worker, you will be responsible for managing a caseload, completing assessments, and devising support plans based on the family's personal goals and strengths. You will also be completing direct work with parents and children in their home or at other venues. There will be opportunities for training and shadowing, and you will be expected to work toward facilitating group activities such as parent courses, children's workshops, and other events as required.
You will need to have a good understanding of the challenges families with a disabled child face including issues relating to emotional regulation, autism, ADHD, learning disabilities and physical impairments. Experience of working or volunteering with disabled children is essential, as is an ability to demonstrate an understanding of how to communicate effectively with children with additional needs.

The post is a fixed term contract until the end of March 2026, at which time it is hoped that further funding will have been secured to maintain the post.
