About St Mary Islington
St Mary Islington has entered into an exciting new partnership with Hope Church Islington.
We are seeking a Finance Assistant to work across the two churches (employed directly by
St Mary Islington) and bring additional finance support to the partnership.
The Finance Assistant will work under the guidance of our experienced Finance Officer and
report to them.
Job Purpose
This role will be to assist the Finance Officer in supporting the day-to-day financial
operations of the two churches in order to ensure the maintenance of accurate financial
records and effective management reporting
Key Responsibilities
Bookkeeping and Financial Processing
? Process income and expenditure transactions, including:
? Inputting purchase ledger and sales ledger invoices
? Bank account transactions
? Making supplier payments and staff expense claims
? Prepayments and accruals journals
? Payroll and pensions journals
? Petty cash
? Maintain accurate records in Google Drive
? Monthly reconciliations (bank, petty cash, debtors, creditors)
? Credit control
Reporting and Monitoring
? Assist in producing monthly budget monitoring reports for leadership and Trustees.
? Assist in the preparation of annual budgets and periodic re-forecasting
Gift Aid and Donations
? Maintain accurate Gift Aid records and prepare regular claims to HMRC
? Maintain systems and records to do with congregational giving and donations
? Assist with annual pattern of communication with givers
Systems and Controls
? Assist with maintaining robust financial policies and procedures.
? Ensure compliance with internal financial controls and charity accounting standards.
? Maintain accurate records in line with GDPR and audit requirements.
Other Duties
? Liaise with suppliers, service users, and staff regarding financial queries.
? Provide support to Finance Officer during external audit
? General administration and ad hoc duties as requested by Operations and Enterprise
Manager
Person Specification
Essential
? Experience in bookkeeping or a finance administration role.
? Competence in using accounting software (preferably Xero and/or Quickbooks)
? Excellent numeracy skills and attention to detail
? Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word
? Organised, proactive, and able to work independently
? Ability to work well in a team environment and manage competing demands
? Good interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate financial matters clearly
? An understanding of the ethos and values of the Church of England
Desirable
? AAT Level 2 qualification or above (or equivalent experience)
? Experience of charity or church finance, including Gift Aid.
