Job Overview
Our client is a well-established
fire engineering and fire safety consultancy
, providing
fire engineering design, fire strategy and fire safety consultancy services
to residential, commercial and mixed-use developments across London and the wider UK.
They are currently seeking an experienced
Fire Engineer
to support the delivery of
fire strategy reports, fire engineering analysis and regulatory compliance advice
across new-build and refurbishment projects. The role sits within a professional consultancy environment and involves close collaboration with architects, designers, contractors, Building Control and other stakeholders.
This is a
UK-based remote hybrid role
, suited to fire engineers with consultancy experience who are confident working with
Approved Document B, BS 9991, BS 9999 and UK Building Regulations
. The Fire Engineer will take ownership of small to medium projects and lead defined fire engineering workstreams on larger schemes, contributing to
Gateway submissions, PAS 9980-type assessments, means of escape analysis, smoke control design and fire safety strategy development
.
The role offers exposure to a varied project portfolio and a clear progression pathway towards senior and chartered fire engineering roles, within a consultancy focused on technical quality, regulatory understanding and proportionate fire engineering solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare and deliver
fire strategy reports
for residential, commercial and mixed-use buildings, in accordance with UK Building Regulations, Approved Document B, BS 9991, BS 9999 and relevant industry guidance.
Review and mark up architectural and MEP drawings, identifying fire safety non-compliances, risks and value-adding design opportunities.
Carry out, oversee or critically review fire engineering analyses, including
means of escape
,
smoke control
,
structural fire behaviour
, and basic CFD or evacuation modelling where applicable.
Produce clear, structured technical reports, design notes and Gateway or Building Control submission material, including responses to regulator and client queries.
Attend and contribute to client meetings, design team meetings and site meetings, explaining fire engineering concepts to non-specialists and providing pragmatic, proportionate advice.
Support or lead fire safety input to
external wall and PAS 9980-type assessments
, where relevant to project workload.
Undertake site inspections and compliance visits, reporting on installation quality, deviations, risks and remedial actions.
Skills & Knowledge
Strong working knowledge of UK fire safety legislation and guidance, including
Approved Document B, BS 9991 and BS 9999
.
Proven ability to interpret architectural and engineering drawings and translate regulatory requirements into buildable design solutions.
Competence in core fire engineering principles, including means of escape, compartmentation, smoke control, fire and smoke spread, detection and alarm systems and suppression concepts.
Experience using relevant fire engineering tools such as zone or movement models, CFD or evacuation modelling software.
High standard of written communication, capable of producing clear and concise fire strategy reports and technical documentation.
Confident verbal communicator, comfortable engaging with clients, design teams, Building Control and Fire and Rescue Services.
Experience & Qualifications
Typically
4-8 years' experience
in fire engineering or fire safety consultancy within a UK or EU design and construction environment.
Degree in Fire Engineering or a relevant engineering discipline such as structural, civil, mechanical or building services engineering, or a related fire science qualification.
Membership of, or working towards membership of, a relevant professional body such as
Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE), CABE or CIBSE
.
Experience delivering fire strategies or equivalent technical outputs across multiple RIBA stages, including responsibility for client liaison and elements of project management.
