Role Profile
North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service is recruiting a skilled and motivated Fire Safety (Protection) Inspector to support the delivery of fire protection duties across the county. This specialist role involves conducting inspections, enforcing legislation, leading investigations, and promoting fire safety to protect lives and property.
Appointed under Article 26 of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and Section 19 of the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, you will have powers to carry out audits, issue legal notices, and lead enforcement actions where fire safety breaches pose serious risks.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct fire safety audits and inspections across a range of premises, including complex and high-risk sites.
Identify compliance issues and recommend proportionate solutions to reduce fire risk.
Lead enforcement actions, including issuing statutory notices and supporting prosecutions.
Investigate complaints and offences, prepare case files, and represent the Authority in legal proceedings.
Collaborate with internal teams and external partners, including local authorities and other enforcing bodies.
Maintain accurate records and contribute to firefighter safety through robust information sharing.
Carryout Building Regulation and Licencing consultations.
Promote fire protection and arson reduction within the community.
Mentor and support other staff in fire safety practices.
Stay up to date with legislation, policies, and technical fire safety matters.
Essential Entry Requirements (Equivalent or transferable qualifications and skills will be considered)
Level 4 Diploma in Fire Safety (or working towards) in line with the NFCC Competency Framework for Fire Safety Regulators.
Willingness to work towards BTEC Diploma in Advanced Investigative Practice Level 7 or equivalent.
Registered with or working towards registration on the Contextualised Auditors Register.
Proven practical experience applying fire safety legislation across various building types.
In-depth knowledge of fire safety principles, including passive and active systems in high-risk premises
Experience leading on fire protection issues and conducting fire risk assessments.
Understanding of cost-benefit analysis and prescriptive code applications.
Strong planning, organisational, and time management skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including training delivery and conflict resolution.
Full UK manual driving licence.
Desirable Entry Requirements
Experience issuing Improvement, Alteration, Enforcement, or Prohibition Notices.
Competence in conducting fire protection risk assessments.
Experience of working in partnership with other agencies to resolve complex cases.
