An apprentice fire and security engineer trains on-the-job to install, maintain, test, and commission fire alarm, security and access control systems while working toward formal qualifications (e.g., an apprenticeship standard, NVQ/SQCF, and industry certifications).
Typical Responsibilities
Assist with installation of fire alarm systems, intruder alarms, CCTV, access control, and related security equipment.
Learn to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and site specifications.
Support fault-finding, servicing, and routine maintenance under supervision.
Carry out system tests and commissioning tasks, recording results accurately.
Help troubleshoot and resolve system issues on customer sites.
Ensure work complies with relevant British Standards (e.g., BS 5839, BS 5266, BS 8220 where relevant) and manufacturer instructions.
Complete timesheets, job reports, and service documentation.
Engage with customers professionally and explain basic system functions.
Follow health & safety procedures and maintain tidy, compliant work areas.
