We are currently seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to join a premier team of Firefighters at the , 48 Civil Engineer Squadron, Royal Air Force (RAF) Lakenheath, United Kingdom.
What will be your primary role?
This is a developmental position. You will be provided job progression training for completion of the requirements of this position.
The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a Firefighter assigned to a crew engaged in airfield, structural firefighting, crash-rescue, National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians and HAZMAT to respond to medical calls and to the presence or potential releases of hazardous materials for the purpose of stopping or controlling the release. the individual will perform hazard and risk assessment and conducts a complete incident analysis. They will drive and operate firefighting vehicles, such as pumpers, aerial ladder trucks, and Airport Rescue Fire Fighting vehicles. They will perform crash-rescue and firefighting duties involving air traffic or support operations where hazardous conditions are such that the expectancy for fire is high and potential for becoming destructive is great. They will also perform structural firefighting duties for a variety of facilities, which may include large multistories buildings, industrial areas, and/or base storage facilities. Performs Basic Life Support at the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians level.

What are the Key Skills required for this role?
Knowledge to drive and operate firefighting vehicles of significant complexity, and the principles of hydraulics as they pertain to waterflow, water pressure, water levels, line (friction) losses, etc.
Knowledge of basic and specialized airfield and structural firefighting equipment (fire alarm system operation, fire extinguishing equipment operation, etc.), techniques, and procedures; and of basic and specialized building design, construction, and occupancy.
Knowledge of hazardous materials emergency response procedures, equipment, identification, and mitigation actions.
Knowledge of Basic life support at the EMT level and safety requirements as outlined in applicable safety standards, regulations, and/or technical orders and protocols.
Skill in operating communications equipment.
Ability to maintain good working relations; to communicate orally and in writing; to lift and carry heavy loads; and to apply emergency first aid techniques; and to conduct complete Hazmat incident analysis.
Employee is required to be certified by the Department of Defense (DOD) Firefighter Certification System in the following:
- Airport Firefighter (includes Firefighter I, II) HAZMAT Awareness
- Apparatus Driver Operator- Mobile Water Supply (MWS) (if applicable)
- NREMT - EMT (must attend the next available EMT course after accepting the position)
What are the conditions of employment for this role?
You will be required to handle and safeguard sensitive information in accordance with applicable US and UK laws, rules and regulations.
You may be required to travel by military and/or civilian aircraft and you may also be required to travel to the US or other country, in the performance of official duties or attend necessary training, this position may also be coded as mission essential.
You will be required to complete a 12-month probationary period.
Overtime may be required.
You may be assigned other duties not included in this position description, but that are appropriate to the grade and skill set of the incumbent.
Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Employee is required to use all safety equipment and clothing provided by management.
This position is considered operational; therefore the incumbent is entitled to receive an Operational Firefighter Pay Supplement for working an approved USAFE 'as rostered' shift pattern, which may include weekends and public holidays.
The employee is required to work 192 hours over a four week period, mainly comprised of 24 hour shifts, which includes weekends and holidays. May be subject to recall.
The Local National Direct Hire (LNDH) Program does not participate in regular drug testing, however positions covered by this document may be subject to drug testing upon reasonable suspicion of substance abuse, and safety mishap or accident testing.
This position requires the employee to work under adverse environmental conditions and falls under the respiratory protection program and hearing conservation program. Position requires the ability to discern colors, contrast, and depth. Employee must participate in a mandatory physical fitness program.
The work requires the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid LGV CAT C driver's license is required.
May be required to work in the Fire Alarm and Communications Center (FACC), and may be required to maintain certification as a Telecommunicator (Level I & II). Please note: Training plans will be established and monitored by the supervisor and may specify the length of time the employee has to obtain certification(s). Some training may require re-certification on a regular and/or intermittent basis.
Special Retirement Provisions Authority: This is a Primary operations position; UK retirement rules apply. There is a mandatory retirement age of 60 years for Primary Firefighters hired under the Local National Direct Hire Program
Employee may be required to facilitate an on-call function over a 24-hour period covering 7 days a week as per the manning roster.
