About the role
Reporting to the Accountable Manager (Flying) AMF), the Flight Operation Post Holder (FOPH) is an experienced aviation operations leader responsible for the management and continuous improvement of R&D Company flying approvals, procedures, documentation and capability. Overarching purpose for the role within the business.
Responsibilities
Maintenance and continuous improvement of our Aviation Operating Framework which enables the safe, compliant and effective accomplishment of company goals
Promoting a success-oriented aviation safety culture across the whole company
Proactive oversight of diverse UAS operations, both at home and on deployment
Continuous improvement of pilot resource capability, capacity and processes to achieve aggressive Company growth plans
Approval (subject to specific competence) of flight test plans and other documentation
Development and approval of policies and procedures relating to flight operations and flight safety
Assurance of quality in all aspects of flight and line maintenance activities
Working with regulators to ensure compliance with all applicable requirements
Representing the company at key RPAS/UAS forums
Acting as UAS crewmember when required/qualified
Periodic deployment, foreign travel etc.
Line management and development of the R&D Flight Ops department
Coach, mentor and develop staff including new starter onboarding and providing career development planning and opportunities
Lead and monitor employees using performance management through establishment of goals, feedback and encouraging employee contribution
Work with Talent Acquisition to recruit, interview, select and hire new employees when required
Create and promote a safe working environment consistent with all applicable company and legislative requirements (e.g. COSHH, HASAW, HSE)
Direct the maintenance of a safe and healthy working environment by eliminating hazards, training employees, and promoting safety awareness
Health & Safety Coordination - regulations, communications, walk-rounds, actions
Demonstrate in daily activities a commitment to health and safety in the workplace by always ensuring tasks are performed in the safest possible manner
Report all hazards and incidents that the individual is party to, or observes, in the correct manner.
When required or directed, participate in any health and safety training.
Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications
Essential
Holds either a military or civilian Crewed aviation qualification (Aircrew or Flight Test Engineer)
A Technical bachelor's degree
Desirable
Chartered Engineer
Degree/NVQ L5+ Management Qualification
UAS or BMFA/LMA Model Flying Qualification
Skills
Essential
Crewed aviation operating experience and qualification including 5+ years of professional aviation leadership
Substantial successful aviation operations delivery in a team environment
Knowledge and experience of aviation regulation and practical governance
Demonstrable ability to create high quality technical/operational documentation
Line Management experience
Flight test/trial experience
Desirable
Commercial aviation experience
Military aviation experience, including knowledge of the Defence Air Environment Operating Framework and MRP
Model aircraft or UAS operating experience and qualification including in leadership roles
Knowledge and experience of applying UK civil UAS regulations (or similar), preferably including SORA competence
Knowledge and experience of applying other UAS regulations
Personal Attributes
Must be a British Citizen or have an existing right to work in the UK
Ability to hold Security Clearance - 5 years residence in the UK
Ability to commit to occasional national and international travel
A full valid UK driving license
