We are looking for an enthusiastic Forestry Supervisor to lead a team in Forestry and Countryside Maintenance.
Main duties and responsibilities
Line manage Forestry Operatives and apprentices through the work that RSS Countryside Management do.
Direct and monitor the Health and Safety of self and all staff. Utilise standard risk assessment protocol and clearly document work instructions in support of day-to-day activities.
Work with appropriate Directors and Operations Manager to ensure the work carried out is to the highest standard, this will include forestry and land based activities such as; felling trees, pruning, tree planting and aftercare, fencing, pole pruner work, strimming/mower, spraying, path and drainage work.
Support and encourage the apprentices and their on-site supervisors.
Engage with training providers and partners to assist with supporting delivery of specific courses and learning.
Be positive, professional and enthusiastic about forestry, the landscape and its conservation.
Carry out such duties as may be determined from time to time within the general scope of the post.
Assist the Directors and Operations Manager with the development of the business.
Essential Skills and Qualifications
A minimum of two years practical work experience of forestry and/or land management and supervision
Full clean driving and trailer licence
Current First Aid Certificate
City & Guilds NPTC Certificate of Competence in Chainsaw Operations or equivalent
City and Guilds Level 2 Safe use of Brush-cutter and trimmer or equivalent
PA1 and PA6
Working knowledge of basic Microsoft packages - outlook, word and excel
Desirable Skills and Qualifications
HND or equivalent in forestry, land management or related higher-level qualification or equivalent experience
City and Guild Level 2/3 tree climbing and aerial rescue
City and guilds Level 3 safe use of a chainsaw from a rope and a harness
City and Guilds Level 2 Safe use of a Pole Mounted Pruner
B+E trailer licence
Essential Specialist Knowledge and Skills
Experience of leading and motivating a team.
Good knowledge, understanding and practical application of Health and Safety requirements in this environment, use of Risk Assessment process
Knowledge and interest in forestry and the landscape
Experience of managing a basic budget
Desirable Specialist Knowledge and Skills
Knowledge of the Modern Apprenticeship format
Membership of FISA or equivalent organisation
A pro-active, problem-solving attitude
Essential Interpersonal & Communication Skills
Excellent communication and inter-personal skills
Ability to coach and develop people in a positive, honest and productive manner
Proven team player able to work effectively with colleagues and external partners
Good at building relationships with others
Essential Relevant Experience
A minimum of two years relevant experience of safe working in this type of environment
Ability to manage a small team to deliver high quality work in the rural sector to agreed deadlines following health and safety protocols
Essential Additional Requirements
Enjoy working outdoors in all weather conditions
Be in good health and able to undertake the often physically challenging activities required of this type of role for example, manual handling, walking through densely wooded areas
Desirable Additional Requirements
Some flexibility in working to align to seasonal opportunities may be required.
