That's why we support you to pursue a career that's unique to you. Because success is personal.

What you'll be doing

Advising nuclear power stations throughout their lifecycle, you will provide guidance on the appropriate nuclear fuel operational envelope to ensure nuclear safety and assess the risks of operating outside that envelope. This includes delivering high-quality technical work, authoring clear and concise reports with sound conclusions and recommendations, and reviewing and verifying the work of peers.

You will be expected to work in one or a combination of the following discipline areas covering both AGR and PWR technologies:

Fuel Design - assessing the design and manufacture of nuclear fuel, individual fuel assembly components and fuel assemblies. Fuel Performance - assessing and modelling of in-reactor and ex-reactor behaviour of nuclear fuel, fuel components, and some core components. Fuel Integrity - understanding the changing properties and behaviour of the fuel through life and advising stations on the operational management of the fuel to address challenges to fuel integrity.

There will also be the opportunity to contribute to and manage nuclear fuel related safety cases.

You will report to the Nuclear Fuel Group Lead, and work with Nuclear Fuel Group members and colleagues across our nuclear family including central and station based teams for our existing fleet of reactors, and those under construction at HPC and SZC.

Staying informed on industry research and operational experience will be key, as will driving your own training and development while challenging technical results and data by asking the right questions. You will summarise complex technical information for colleagues and confidently present to senior stakeholders and external regulators.

Collaboration is central to the role. You'll work closely with stakeholders and colleagues to solve complex technical problems, contribute to technical meetings and working groups, and help balance priorities and resources across teams. There will also be opportunities to foster a positive team culture by sharing knowledge and supporting others to achieve team and personal objectives.

Who you are

You'll be applying strong technical expertise in mechanical engineering, materials science or applied physics (degree level or above) to support the safe and efficient operation of nuclear power stations. Alternatively, a combination of academic qualifications in a relevant technical discipline and demonstrable knowledge or experience in the field will also be considered.

You'll bring a solid track record of experience in areas related to AGR and/or PWR fuel and fuel components. Knowledge of fuel safety cases, fuel degradation mechanisms, primary circuit coolant activity monitoring systems, and failed fuel management processes would be highly advantageous.

We're looking for someone with proven ability to solve complex technical challenges in a highly regulated environment, with excellent analytical and communication skills to engage effectively with stakeholders at all levels and influence outcomes.

If this sounds like you then we'd love to hear from you!

To be appointed to this role, you will need to meet the criteria for Counter Terrorist Check (CTC) which will, ordinarily, require you to have British residency for the last 3 years.

Closing date for applications: 27th July 2025
