About the Role


We're looking for a hands-on, proactive General Maintenance Operative to work across our busy steelwork site. You'll support our Maintenance Supervisor with day-to-day repairs, planned maintenance, and project work across all areas - including our galvanizing plant, powder coating site, main yard, and other site areas.

No two days are the same here - you'll get involved in everything from basic site repairs to helping keep our machinery and facilities running safely and efficiently, with support from a small maintenance team consisting of general maintenance, fabricator, and electrician.

This is a great opportunity for someone practical, adaptable, and keen to learn. There is potential for further training and qualifications to help you develop your skills further.

Pay and Hours



Full-time, permanent - Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week (start time flexible - 7:00 am or 8:00 am)

Hourly pay paid weekly every Friday - pay rate dependent on experience of candidate

Standby 70.00 per week plus 100.00 per call-out (rota'd one week per month).

Occasional weekends and overtime required. Overtime paid at enhanced rate over 40 hours per week.

Key Responsibilities



Support the Maintenance Supervisor with general maintenance, repairs, and site improvements across all departments (galvanizing, powder coating, yard, fabrication areas). Carry out routine maintenance and inspections of plant, cranes, equipment, and building systems. Perform basic mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic repairs with support from the maintenance team (e.g. replacing parts, greasing/lubrication, checking wires, etc.) Handle and work safely with industrial chemicals and cleaning agents (e.g. acids, fluxes, paints, degreasers, etc.) as part of maintenance. Assist with fabrication, drilling, welding, installation, and other general maintenance work as required. Carry out general handyman duties such as fixing cranes, gates, doors, lighting, pipework, flooring, or structural work. Maintain safe working practices and follow site health & safety procedures at all times. Take part in standby rota (approx. one week per month) for galvanizing bath maintenance and emergency breakdowns. Support ongoing site improvement and refurbishment projects as directed. Be willing to work overtime or occasional weekends when needed.

The Ideal Candidate



Previous experience in a general maintenance, engineering, or workshop environment. Comfortable working in a heavy industrial or manufacturing setting (metalwork, fabrication, galvanizing, powder coating, etc.) Practical mechanical skills - able to use hand tools, power tools, grinders, drills, etc. confidently. Basic mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic knowledge (advantageous). Experience working safely with industrial chemicals or following COSHH procedures (training can be provided). Able to work safely at height when required. Good problem-solving attitude - able to assess and fix issues independently. Proactive, flexible, and willing to get stuck into all kinds of jobs. Reliable and safety conscious with a strong work ethic. Full UK driving license preferred (site vehicles used).
