The Prescribing Clerk is responsible for supporting the safe, accurate, and timely processing of prescription requests within the practice. The role plays a key part in ensuring effective medicines management, supporting clinicians, and providing a high standard of service to patients, while working within practice policies and national prescribing guidance.
Key Responsibilities
Prescription Processing
Process repeat prescription requests in line with practice protocols and timescales
Generate and issue prescriptions using the clinical system (e.g. EMIS Web)
Ensure prescriptions are authorised appropriately by a GP, pharmacist, or prescriber
Manage electronic prescriptions (EPS), including nomination changes
Medicines Management Support
Support clinicians and the pharmacy team with prescription queries
Identify and flag medication requests that fall outside agreed protocols
Support medication synchronisation and review processes
Assist with prescription-related audits and searches
Patient & Pharmacy Liaison
Respond to patient enquiries relating to prescriptions in a professional and timely manner
Liaise with community pharmacies regarding prescription issues, shortages, or clarifications
Communicate delays or changes to patients clearly and sensitively
Clinical System & Record Management
Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient medication records
Update repeat medication lists following medication changes, discharge letters, and clinic outcomes
Governance & Safety
Support safe prescribing practices by highlighting anomalies, duplication, or missing reviews
Escalate concerns promptly to a clinician or senior staff member
Administrative Support
Support prescription workload planning to meet demand
Assist with recall systems for medication reviews and monitoring
Undertake other administrative duties as required to support the practice
Experience & Skills
Essential
Previous administrative experience, ideally within a GP practice or healthcare setting
Excellent attention to detail and high levels of accuracy
Good IT skills and confidence using clinical systems
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
Ability to manage workload effectively in a busy environment
Desirable
Experience working with repeat prescriptions or medicines management
Familiarity with EMIS Web or similar GP clinical systems
Understanding of NHS primary care processes
Experience liaising with pharmacies or clinical teams
Knowledge & Training
Understanding of confidentiality, data protection, and information governance
Awareness of safe prescribing principles (training can be provided)
Willingness to undertake ongoing training and development
