Introduction and role purpose

GSK\xe2\x80\x99s General Medicines therapeutic area (TA) is vital to GSK, with a portfolio of trusted brands that will impact the lives of 700 million patients in the next decade. General Medicines delivers ~\xc2\xa39bn in sales for GSK and
90% of all of GSK pharmaceuticals volumes across ~150 brands and 10,000 SKUs to ~110 countries.

It is our ambition to transform General Medicines from delivering \xe2\x80\x9cbroadly stable\xe2\x80\x9d sales into being a growth engine for GSK. To achieve this, we have defined and are implementing disease area strategies in partnership with R&D, medical, commercial and corporate development. These strategies have and continue to shape our portfolio through targeted business development (BD) acquisitions and in-licensing deals.

In order to support the robust and disciplined Medical evaluation, pursuit and integration of BD opportunities, we require a dedicated Early Global Medical Affairs Lead (GMAL) to work closely with the Product & Disease Area Strategy team, Corporate Business Development team and relevant Medical SMEs.

This is a high-visibility strategic role with the potential to drive improved patient outcomes and \xc2\xa3bn impact through Business Development for General Medicines. He/she will require novel and agile ways of working, connections to country-level Medical Affairs and external expert input, and an ability to combine scientific understanding with a practical grasp of patient unmet need, physician perspectives, treatment landscape and payer priorities.

Key elements/responsibilities of role

  • Develop and execute the Medical evaluation of BD and new pipeline assets based on the General Medicines TA needs, licensing deals and divestments, in collaboration with the relevant Medical SMEs (incl. GMALs, key LOC MALs etc.)
  • In partnership with other leaders, drive the evolution of robust Medical BD foundation, providing the strategic medical perspective
  • Build the Medical assessment framework to drive disciplined and systematic evaluation of opportunities
  • Build deep understanding (incl. through external insights generation/advice seeking) of the:
  • Pathophysiology of target diseases, the science behind target mechanisms of action and their potential benefits in clinical practice
  • Target patient population, patient pathway and current/future treatment landscape (incl. competitor assets in development)
  • Facilitate the input into the Integrated Asset Plan (IAP) work packages necessary to define the strategy and forecast the valuation of business development targets, including:
  • Situational analysis and disease overview
  • Target Medicine profile
  • Forecast and valuation
  • Marketing plan based on a differentiated product profile
  • Pricing and market access plan
  • Work in close partnership with commercial portfolio to effectively work through the business development and due diligence processes, ensuring key milestones and work packages are delivered on time and to an exceptional standard
  • Support for driving alignment around the investment thesis, business case and value proposition for BD opportunities with key GCLT stakeholders (e.g., Regional Heads, GPS Heads, Chief Commercial Officer) to promote accelerated progress through Due Diligence and the deal process
  • Support alignment across relevant strategic plans (e.g., CDP; TMP, CMC; biomarker strategy; key claims; investment thesis & business case) for BD targets
  • Support the investment thesis and business case generation, review and approval process via the Forecast Review Committee (FRC)
  • Lead integration planning and integration for BD acquisitions incl. day 1 readiness and resource demand planning
  • Provide global medical affairs leadership for acquired assets until handover to dedicated Medical Leads incl. (but not limited to):
  • Strategic medical insights into R&D and commercialization strategies: profiling patient pathways; mapping the treatment landscape and how it may evolve in the lifecycle of the asset; identifying gaps and opportunities based on emerging data, competitor activity and understanding of diverse healthcare systems
  • Strategic alignment with clinical development and central and regional partner functions, to develop and optimize the medicine profile and evidence generation plans in support of the scientific value proposition of assigned assets and aligns resource needs
  • Global scientific engagement strategy for the asset, including at scientific congresses, advisory boards or other events where appropriate. Drives excellence in scientific engagement with key stakeholders (HCPs, Patients, Payers and Regulators) to gather medical insights and build a deep understanding of customer needs to inform and shape the portfolio\xe2\x80\x99s development program
  • Contributing expertise in scientific issues related to clinical development, study design, data interpretation and study conclusions
Basic qualifications and experience
  • Medical Doctor with broad industry experience
  • Experience as a medical affairs leader at country and global level
  • Experience of Clinical Development in Respiratory or Infectious Diseases
  • Experience of working & engaging successfully with external experts
  • Experience of working within a matrix environment
  • Ability to clearly identify priorities and manage multiple tasks
  • Ability to strategically plan & work across boundaries and geographies effectively
  • Experience of assimilating information rapidly and identifying critical questions that will drive decision-making and planning
  • Ability to manage ambiguity, evaluate benefit and risk and take appropriate accountability for decision making
  • Experience in considering scientific data and practical healthcare delivery needs from diverse health systems to optimise medical implementation of innovation
  • Experience of collaborative team working with a wide range of stakeholders internally and externally
  • Experience of working with health outcomes, go-to-market models, commercial positioning, market access and reimbursement requirements
Preferred experience
  • MBA
  • Consulting or Venture Capital experience
