We are a small, friendly GP Practice looking to appoint two GP Assistants within our Medical team.
Both positions will be expected to work 30 hours per week.
Position 1: 08.00 - 15.00 (6 hours per day)
Position: 2 12.00-18.00 (6 hours per day)
We are looking for a proactive and compassionate GP Assistants to join our friendly and dynamic team at Ashwell Surgery. This is an exciting opportunity to support our GPs in delivering efficient and high-quality care to patients.
You will help with a range of administrative and basic clinical tasks, freeing up GP time to focus on more complex patient needs. The role is varied, fast-paced, and rewarding -- ideal for someone interested in a healthcare career or with experience in primary care.
You will be expected to complete the Fundamentals skills of General Practice Assistants course. This will be fully funded and takes approximately 36 weeks to achieve.
On successful completion and skills increase salary will be reviewed.
Job Summary:
The GP Assistant will work under the supervision of GPs and the Practice Manager to provide both clinical and administrative support. The postholder will assist in improving the efficiency of the GP team and the experience of patients.
Key Responsibilities:
Administrative Duties:
- Prepare patients for consultations (e.g. checking blood pressure, urinalysis, phlebotomy) - Update medical records accurately - Support with coding and summarising medical records - Process documents such as hospital letters, test results, and referrals - Liaise with external agencies and secondary care
Clinical Support (after training):
- Take basic observations (e.g. height, weight, BP) - Conduct ECGs and venepuncture - Perform point-of-care tests - Conduct NHS Health Checks - Provide lifestyle advice within scope
Practice Support:
- Assist with managing recall systems - Chase up test results and coordinate patient follow-ups - Support audits and quality improvement initiatives
Note: Clinical tasks depend on experience and successful completion of appropriate training.

The post holder will manage, process, store and / or use the data held only in line with the Practice information governance policy and will report any breaches / incidences where patient confidentiality has been broken to the Practice Manager or Information Governance lead as soon as they are aware. The post holder will also participate and undertake annual information governance / confidentiality training as directed by the information governance lead and / or Practice Manage.
Health & safety:
The post-holder will assist in promoting and maintaining their own and others' health, safety and security as defined in the practice health & safety policy, the practice health & safety manual, and the practice infection control policy and published procedures. This will include:
Using personal security systems within the workplace according to practice guidelines
Identifying the risks involved in work activities and undertaking such activities in a way that manages those risks
Making effective use of training to update knowledge and skills
Using appropriate infection control procedures, maintaining work areas in a tidy and safe way, free from hazards
Actively reporting health and safety hazards and infection hazards immediately when recognised
Keeping own work areas and general/patient areas generally clean, assisting in the maintenance of general standards of cleanliness consistent with the scope of the job holder's role
Undertaking periodic infection control training (minimum annually)
Reporting potential risks identified
Demonstrate due regard for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
