Costain Graduate Development Programme:



Our programme will focus on helping individual to learn a mix of both Leadership and Technical skills.


We offer a structured training programme to enable graduates to work towards achieving Chartership in their chosen field.


Graduates may also have the opportunity, after the first 8 - 10 months to rotate and to work on a number of exciting and progressive projects around the UK during the 2-year period, experiencing the best we have to offer across the different sectors we work in.


Our line managers are fully supportive of the Graduate Development Programme and will be involved in helping you along the way.



1.0

Line Management



1.1 Framework Level The Designated Design Manager (DDM) will undertake line management responsibility for the Graduate Design Manager (GDM).




2.0

Project Reporting



2.1 Project Level Graduate Design Manager will liaise with their allocated Design Manager for the delivery of de-risking, SG3 and SG4 design to cost quality and programme.




3.0

Must Do's





3.1 Eliminating Harm Reviews GDM support the Designated Design Manager to ensure DES-M-256 requirements are met, .i.e. manage monthly CDM reviews ensuring eliminating harm take opportunities are recorded and incorporated in the design.




3.2 Carbon Baseline GDM support the Designated Design Manager to ensure DES-M-401 requirements are met by ensure the project has a carbon baseline that informs carbon reduction targets and that a plan is in place to achieve targets.




4.0

Design Procurement



4.1 Design Services Scope
With support from the Designated Design Manager develop the de-risking scope for the design partner and issue with supporting information to facilitate a fee return.



Review the return with support for the DDM and share with the Pre-Construction Lead and allocated Project Manager.



Engage with the Commercial team to ensure a PSSC has been prepared and issued to the design partner.



Once is contract for delivery manage the de-risking progress meeting and report to the wider team.







4.2 Production Thinking Strategy GDM support the DDM in developing the Production Thinking Strategy during the design phase.




5.0

Key Responsibilities





5.1 Assumptions, Production Thinking, Biodiversity, Carbon, Opportunities, Eliminating harm, technical risk, design change, risk and escalation tracker. GDM support the DDM to ensure the trackers are updated weekly on a project-by-project basis. Escalating key risk and issues to the Framework Engineering Manager.




5.2 MIDP (Deliverables Schedule)
GDM manage the project MIDP to ensure it tracks planned against actual for each deliverable.



Ensure the MIDP is created and maintained by the designer and issued weekly.



Challenge the Design Partner to meet the delivery dates.







5.3 Biodiversity GDM support the DDM to ensure Biodiversity requirements are met in accordance with the TW project brief.




5.4 Carbon baseline GDM support the DDM to ensure a carbon baseline is created for the project, and this tracked through design and construction to demonstrate any carbon savings.




5.5 Design Coordination Reviews GDM support the DDM in the design coordination reviews within the federated model with the design team, delivery team and client .




5.6 CDM risk register review GDM support the DDM in the monthly review of the designers CDM risk register to ensure design risks, including eliminating harm opportunities, have been captured and mitigated and the principles of safe-by -design are met. Further where residual risk remain these are identified in the register.




5.7 Aphex Four weekly Lookahead GDM support the DDM in the management of the four weekly lookahead in Aphex including managing the interface with the Design Partner.




5.8 Delivery Team Design Reviews GDM support the DDM in the Delivery Team Design reviews to ensure the design information provided by the designer aligns with the production thinking strategy, provides the right information to facilitate construction and aligns with the MEICA technical expectations.




5.9 Client CSR Reviews GDM support the DDM in preparation for Contractual Solution (CSR) deliverables review.




5.10 Comment Sheet Management GDM support the DDM to ensure comments from both the Delivery Team Design and Client CSR reviews are combined onto the appropriate comment sheets before they are issued to the designer.




5.11 Buildability Reviews GDM support the DDM the management of the reviews with the delivery team Clients Technical Manager and Technical Assurance Engineer.




5.12 D&A log Management GDM to manage the D&A log for each project and issue out to attendees




5.13 Document Control
GDM support the DDM in the management of document control interface. This includes but is not limited to the following:



Ensuring the designer is issued and has access to all project information. Ensuring all completed TQs/RFIs are uploaded/transmitted on iCosNet and BCDE. Ensuring any new information is transmitted to the designer.
Ensure final deliverables are transmitted to the iCosNet and BCDE.





5.14 Design Meetings Internal GDM support the DDM in scheduling weekly design meetings, acting as chair, and recording the actions. The MEICA Lead will provide input to these meetings to support the design delivery.




5.15 Client Progress Meetings GDM support the DDM in the scheduling and management of client progress meetings.




5.16 Swift, HAZOP, ALM GDM support the DDM in scheduled these meetings and ensuring the actions are recorded and completed in the agreed timescales




5.17 Pre- CSR Meeting GDM support the DDM to ensure all deliverables have or/are being reviewed. To act as chair for the pre-CSR meeting ensuring all actions are recorded.




5.18 CSR Meeting GDM support the DDM in the CSR meeting, recording actions and ensuring these are closed in the allotted timescales.




5.19 Technical Review meetings GDM schedule the weekly Technical review meeting with the TW Technical Assurance Team to review and close out technical issues. Ensure the ADM updated the TQ register accordingly following the meetings.




5.20 TW Asset Standard Compliance GDM support the DDM by ensuring the designer confirms their design aligns with the TW asset standards, or the appropriate asset waiver has been raised.




5.21 Quality Audits
GDM support the DDM to ensure all quality audit metrics are delivered.


Audit template has been developed and is stored on the MS Teams site.







5.22 Design Change Management GDM support the DDM in the management of change from designer. This shall include recording the actions from the risk reduction meetings and managing the EWN tracker.




5.23 Redline Drawing Management GDM support the DDM in the management of the redline process with the design partner.




5.24 As-Builts GDM support the DDM with the as-built process, this includes redlines with support for the Assistant Design Manager.

An Design/Engineering Degree with at least 2:2 or above IT proficient (Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD and other software) A good working knowledge of construction methods, materials and regulations. Excellent organisation, communication, and time management skills. A willingness to learn and take on new challenges. Have passion for Costain's Carbon Net Zero targets. A willingness to learn with appropriate instruction Excel at building and maintaining positive relationships The ability to thrive in time sensitive situations Excellent organisation, communication, and time management skills Mobility to work on various projects over the 2-year programme throughout the UK if required
