We are looking for candidates who are willing to locate to a variety of locations based in Peterborough and surrounding area, where they can develop and extend their skills and capabilities in this exciting discipline. This would be for September 2026 intake.



Project Overview



The Anglian Water Strategic Pipeline Alliance (SPA) project currently involves the planning, design and construction of circa 320km of new strategic, large diameter, clean water interconnector pipelines and associated infrastructure across Anglian Water's region. The SPA Alliance is also taking on responsibility for the future interconnector pipelines, a further 260km of strategic interconnector pipelines and associated infrastructure.

Full UK Driving Licence is essential



Please note that some roles may be within the Nuclear & Defence sector and candidates will need to obtain Security Clearance and have been resident in the UK for the last 5 years


Costain's Graduate Development Programme



The programme will focus on helping you to grow your personal and leadership skills, alongside business and of course, the technical skills you will learn day-to-day on the job, the programme will provide you with specific technical training for your specialised discipline.


The programme is delivered in a variety of formats throughout the 2 years and will allow you to establish a network of contacts that will help and support you through your first 2 years and beyond. We expect some of our graduates to rotate after a period of 8-12 months, to another project/sector of the business to fully understand the depth and breadth of the services offered by the company.


Our line managers are fully supportive of the Graduate Development Programme and will be involved in helping you along the way.


In addition to the programme, we offer mentoring and support in every area of work, as well as a structured training programme to enable graduates to work towards achieving Chartership.


Graduates may have the opportunity to work on a number of exciting and progressive projects around the UK during the 2-year period, in sectors including nuclear, highways, rail, water, airports and tunnels.



Essential:



Environmental related experience Environmental related degree & IEMA Associate Qualification or equivalent NVQ Affiliate Member IOSH or Affiliate Member IEMA or equivalent Mobility to work on various projects over the 2-year programme throughout the UK -

Full UK Driving Licence is essential

Candidate must be able to obtain security clearance as some roles are within the Nuclear & Defence sector

Desirable:



Relevant SHE experience in construction/engineering industry Tech IOSH or AIEMA or equivalent

As some of our project sites are based in remote locations, it is worth noting that you will be required to have the ability to travel to site.





Providing support to construction projects on environmental issues, including assisting with document production and review as necessary. Support the CEM in consulting with environmental regulators and key stakeholders and apply for consent permits when required. Work collaboratively across the SPA contracts to ensure requirements of the Construction Environment Management Plan are delivered at appropriate construction stages. Working closely with and communicating clearly the environmental constraints to the construction teams and SHEA advisers. Deliver training to the construction teams on environmental issues. Contribute to relevant section planning, progress and construction meetings. Ensure compliance with current environmental legislation and promote best practices relevant to SPA. Make the Construction Environmental Manager aware of potential environmental risks to the project. Undertake site inspections as defined by the frequency within the Construction Environmental Management Plan document. Provide assistance for external audits to ISO14001 standards and requirements detailed in the EMS. Provide guidance, support and feedback from the internal audits and inspections to the construction teams. Form part of the CAT1 and CAT2 incident investigation team and assist with the reporting and investigation of CAT3 and CAT4 / Near miss reporting. Reviewing Speak Up data log for environmental issues and close out. Assist with the development and deliver training materials (such as case studies, toolbox talks etc.) as required Ensure environmental data is captured onto the M2i reporting system in a timely manner (incidents, audits, inspections, Speak Ups and near miss).

Knowledge, skills and Experience



Contaminated Land, Statutory Nuisance, Waste Management, Ecology, Incident investigation, Environmental permitting Knowledge of key environmental legislation Data analysis and interpretation experience Experience in communicating with people at all levels Experience in writing reports and dashboard production Good verbal and written communication skills Problem solving skills Document production abilities using various software inc., excel, word, GIS, PowerPoint. Organisational skills Negotiation skills Conflict resolution Excellent organisations, communication and time management skills Have passion for Costain's Carbon Net Zero targets IT proficient Able to work accurately and appreciate its importance to the team A willingness to learn with appropriate instruction Excel at building and maintaining positive relationships The ability to thrive in pressured situations * The ability to empathise and communicate with all people, regardless of their background or circumstances
