The difference you will make as an Group Tax Manager



You will be reporting to the Director of Treasury and Corporate Finance, the Group Tax Manager will be responsible for all of the tax affairs of the Group. Whilst VAT is the main applicable tax, a working knowledge of PAYE, CIS, Corporate Tax and SDLT is also required, as support for these taxes needs to be provided as required. The role has one direct report and requires experience of training and mentoring others.


The role will lead the delivery of the tax strategy and look to make continuous improvements to tax reporting processes, ensuring compliance with all relevant taxes by Group companies and that all returns are filed accurately on time. The role is also the first point of contact for any tax queries arising from members of the Group. This can include be asked to provide tax advice on projects (mainly development / construction).


About You



We are looking for someone who has:


Relevant tax knowledge which could include: + CIOT qualified (preferably indirect route);
+ Professional accounting firm tax training (preferably indirect taxes); or
+ Minimum three years' experience working in an in-house tax team (with indirect tax experience)
Experience in compiling, reviewing and submitting VAT returns, including a strong working knowledge of VAT for construction / development projects and partial exemption Strong written and verbal communication skills, including being able to explain complex tax issues to people without a finance background A capable influencer, someone able to negotiate and make decisions, with the confidence to deal with people at different levels of the business and with different external stakeholders, including HMRC

Role Profile



The Group Tax Manager also leads the relationship with the Group's external tax advisers to ensure that additional tax advice is sought in a timely and efficient manner when required and that corporation tax compliance is completed to the agreed budget.


Whilst a hybrid role, there is an expectation that the job holder be in the office during key parts of the VAT compliance timetable, thus there should be an expectation to travel and work at least once a month for 3 days in the Riverside Offices in Speke, Liverpool and / or Camden, London. More days in the office may be required for project work and or training / mentoring of the direct report.

Day to day responsibilities:



Include, but are not limited to:

Group tax compliance



Ensure that all Group companies remain compliant with all relevant taxes and that all tax returns are filed, and all payments made, on time. This includes reviewing the returns, especially VAT and CIS and correcting any errors identified prior to submission and ensuring that VAT Partial Exemption is appropriately calculated and reflected in the returns; Manage the delivery of the Group Tax Strategy, including maintaining the Group Tax Risk Matrix and liaising with risk owners in the wider business to ensure they understand how to mitigate those risks. Design and implement stronger tax controls where required; Liaise with the wider business to ensure that the tax consequences of transactions are understood and that transactions are properly recorded in the Group accounting systems to allow for proper and timely reporting to HMRC. Provide additional tax training as needed to colleagues and / or design processes to remove tax risk from regular transaction types; Lead the implementation of 'Making Tax Digital' within the Group; suggest and deliver improvements to processes for tax reporting and / or tax efficiency within the Group; To the extent that there are any HMRC enquiries (into any tax) and / or inspections by HMRC, lead and manage the process (with input from external advisers as needed); Help the Group to achieve an agreed Partial Exemption Special Method (PESM) with HMRC; and Evaluate the impact of changes in tax legislation (mainly indirect taxes) on the business and suggest changes to processes / reporting / compliance as required.

Supporting the business and colleagues



Manage, train and mentor the Tax and Treasury Accounts Assistant, especially with regards to tax knowledge and expertise; Act as a subject matter expert for tax matters as and when needed to help the business meet its defined goals and / or to help ensure the successful conclusion of projects. In the short term, this will include the transition to a new finance system (Oracle), helping to ensure that set up is maximised for Making Tax Digital and wider VAT and Corporate Tax reporting; Deal with ad hoc tax queries from colleagues and where necessary, provide tax advice for project work. This can include ensuring that development projects are contracted in the most efficient way for tax purposes, with the use of correct and appropriate contract types; Liaise with external tax providers as required; build and lead the day-to-day relationship with external tax advisers, including management of scopes, budgets and invoices for their services. However, the Group Tax Manager should seek to reduce dependency on external tax advisers as much as possible to reduce fees payable; Share tax knowledge and help to upskill other members of the Group Finance team and / or other members of the business as required; and Undertake relevant training and / or coaching (including participation in sector industry groups as appropriate) to ensure that personal knowledge, qualifications and skill base are kept current and relevant.

Other Information



The role reports to the Director of Treasury and Corporate Finance and forms part of the wider Treasury and Corporate Finance team within The Riverside Group Limited. The team provides treasury, tax and pensions support to all entities within the wider group and not just to The Riverside Group Limited. The Group Tax Manager will need to be able to demonstrate strong prioritisation skills with the ability to deliver accurate and detailed information to agreed deadlines. The successful applicant will need to be able to deliver to high standards whilst largely working remotely, but can also function effectively as part of a team and will enrich the team experience and knowledge base. However, office locations (Speke / Camden) are available if onsite working is preferred. Some work may need to be performed onsite, so the successful candidate should expect to spend at least 3 days per month in an office environment. Flexibility can be achieved with regards to the office location between Speke and Camden. Some travel to other parts of the business around the country may also be required from time to time. Travel other than to the home designated office will be paid for by Riverside.

Experience designing and implementing tax control processes compliant with the Senior Accounting Officer regime Awareness of other taxes (PAYE, Corporation Tax, CIS and SDLT) Significant IT literacy, particularly strong demonstrable Excel skills; must be comfortable manipulating data to produce high quality reports and also be able to present and interpret reports when called upon so to do Experience with Oracle accounting software * Experience of system and process improvement
