Gujarati Translator

Leicester, United Kingdom

Job Description

Role
We are seeking an experienced Translator to adapt a Medical English handbook into:

Gujarati

The role is to start from the Tuesday 1st August 2023 and is to work a maximum of 50 hours over 4 weeks. If the project is completed sooner, the client will use the remaining hours to work on an extension project to fill the hours.

Our client is looking for a skilled and native translator to help them translate their Children\'s Diabetes Handbook into new languages using the Canva platform.

The translated materials will then be proofread by an NHS employee to ensure medical accuracy meaning that you do not need in-depth medical knowledge of type-1 diabetes.
As a Translator, your role will be crucial in accurately conveying the content to a wider audience while maintaining the original style and tone.

It is important to note that the use of translation software, such as Google Translate, is strictly prohibited as the sole method of translation. If auto translation is used, all translations must be reviewed manually.

All the translations are for the UK audience only, this means they should not be localized for a different country, such as changing emergency phone numbers etc.
It is the intention for this book to be printed and distributed to hospitals.

Duties and responsibilities

Translate the entire Children\'s Diabetes Handbook from the source language to the target language using the Canva platform, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and consistency.
Collaborate closely with an NHS employee who will review and verify the medical accuracy of the translated materials.

Adapt the translation to suit the linguistic and cultural nuances of the target audience, particularly children, while preserving the intended meaning and tone.

Avoid the use of machine translation tools, such as Google Translate as the sole method of translation without proofreading.

Proofread and edit the translated materials within the Canva platform to eliminate errors, improve quality, and ensure consistent formatting.

Collaborate with the design team to ensure the visual elements, layout, and typography of the translated materials in Canva are aligned with the original handbook and are suitable for the target audience.

Adhere to established deadlines and effectively manage time to deliver high-quality translations within the given timeframe.

Skills and experience
Demonstrable written skills in both languages.
Proficiency in both the source language (original handbook) and the target language (to be translated) with excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Familiarity with cultural nuances and sensitivities related to translating for a children\'s audience.

Excellent attention to detail, with the ability to produce accurate and error-free translations manually.

Ability to collaborate effectively with an NHS employee for proofreading and ensuring medical accuracy.

A degree or certification in translation, linguistics, or a related field is preferred but not mandatory.

Demonstrated ability to work independently while also being a collaborative team player.

Location
The role can either be remote working or at the clients office based at the Innovation Centre, De Montfort University Campus.
