Role Purpose



To plan and deliver high quality - inclusive hairdressing and barbering sessions that engage and inspire children and young people with complex needs, including those with Special Educational needs (SEN).

The role involves supporting students to gain practical skills, build confidence and achieve vocational qualifications such as VTCT and AQA unit Awards.

The Hair and Barbering Tutor will contribute to each student personal, social and academic development through a student-centred approach, preparing them for progression into further training, education or employment.

Key Responsibilities



Plan, prepare and deliver high-quality practical and theory-based sessions in hairdressing and barbering that meet the needs of diverse learners. Support the delivery and assessment of vocational qualifications such as VTCT Level 1 & 2 and AQA unit awards, in line with awarding body requirements. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of awarding body standards and assessment criteria to ensure compliance and quality assurance Promote and embed life skills, employability and functional skills (English and Maths) into sessions where appropriate. Accurately complete and maintain internal verification paperwork, evidence portfolios and qualification tracking documents. Create a safe, inclusive and calm learning environment that promotes trust, resilience and personal growth. Adapt sessions to accommodate a wide range of learning styles, SEN needs. Work collaboratively with support staff, mentors and other professionals to meet students' academic and emotional needs. Contribute to the development and implementation of individual learning plans, (ILP's), Education Health and Care plans (EHCPs) and risk assessments. Ensure tools, products and equipment are used safely and that the salon/workshop space meets all health and safety and safeguarding standards. Track student progress, maintain accurate records and contribute to reviews and reporting. Provide encouragement and constructive feedback, promoting positive self-image and confidence. Attend staff meetings, training and professional development relevant to the role.

Practical Expertise

- Strong technical skills in hairdressing and/or barbering, with the ability to confidently demonstrate and guide learners through a range of techniques.

Adaptability

- Able to adjust teaching methods and content to suit learners with SEN. Communication - Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage learners and work collaboratively with colleagues and professionals.

De-escalation management

- Skilled in managing challenging behaviour calmly and constructively using restorative approaches.

Relationship building

- Ability to form positive trusting relationships with students who may be disengaged, anxious or lacking in confidence.

Organisation

- Strong planning and organisational skills to manage session preparation, assessment and learner progress tracking.

Motivational coaching

- Ability to inspire learners, build self-esteem, and create a supportive encouraging learning environment.

Health and Safety awareness

- Understanding of best practices in maintaining a safe and hygienic salon or workshop environment, including safe use of equipment and products.

Record Keeping

- competent in maintaining accurate records of attendance, progress, behaviour and assessment in line with awarding body and organisational standards.

Empathy and Patience

- emotionally intelligent, calm and patient when supporting students with complex needs or difficult life experiences.

Digital Literacy

- Able to use basic ICT tools for lesson planning, learner tracking and accessing qualification resources e.g. AQA VTCT portals.

Experience and Qualifications



Essential



Recognised qualification in hairdressing or barbering e.g. NVQ level 2 or 3 VTCT equivalent. Teaching or training qualification e.g. PTLLS, Award in Education and training or willingness to work towards. Experience delivering or supporting qualifications such as VTCT and AQA unit awards or equivalent. Experience working with children and young people, particularly those with SEN. Strong behaviour management and interpersonal skills with the ability to build positive relationships. Knowledge of safeguarding, child protection and health and safety protocols in a practical learning environment. Passion for vocational education and supporting learners achieve their potential. First Aid certification, or willingness to work towards

Desirable



Assessor qualification e.g. TAQA, CAVA or willingness to work towards. Knowledge of relevant education frameworks e.g. EHCP's PEPs Experience in mentoring or youth work Hair/barbering industry experience, including current trends and workplace standards.

This includes those that could be classified as vulnerable and both an understanding of and experience in adhering to UK safeguarding legislation is required.
