We are seeking an honest, trustworthy, reliable and dedicated Caretaker to support the day-to-day operations and maintenance of our mosque facilities. This role is essential in ensuring our premises remain welcoming, safe, and well-maintained for our community members and visitors throughout the year, with increased responsibilities during key religious periods.
Key Responsibilities
Hall Management
Open and close the hall for external hires (typically 3 times per week)
Inspect the hall after each hire to ensure it is left in good condition
Collect hire fees and pass them on to the appropriate person/account as instructed
Ensure the hall remains clean and tidy throughout the week (in addition to regular cleaning services)
Open the hall for regular events as required including Friday evenings
Assist with setting up chairs and other arrangements for special events when required
Maintenance and Reporting
Conduct regular walk-throughs of the premises at least twice weekly to monitor the condition of all areas
Report any broken equipment, damage, or items requiring repair to the appropriate person
Identify and report maintenance needs, including outdoor areas (e.g., gardening requirements around the portacabin, building exterior concerns)
Act as the first point of contact for any urgent facility issues
Community Support
Prepare and serve tea for approximately 50 attendees at the Friday programme (around 8:30pm)
Collect and transport food for regular programmes (Fridays, Muharram, Ramadan programmes and other special events) as required
Provide general assistance during community events as needed
Maintain a welcoming and helpful presence for mosque users
Helping to transport equipment for Sunday School on Sunday mornings at 9:00am
Seasonal Responsibilities
Ramadan (approximately 30 days)
Open the mosque for daily programmes as required (frequency varies)
Support increased activity levels with additional opening times
Assist with food collection and preparation for daily programmes
Muharram (first 10 nights)
Open and manage the premises for daily evening programmes
Support food collection and service requirements
Ensure facilities are prepared for increased attendance
General Duties
Maintain security of the premises by ensuring doors and windows are properly secured
Monitor and report any health and safety concerns
Support the smooth running of mosque activities through proactive facility management
Accurately record all hours worked for payroll purposes
Other duties as reasonably required to support the mosque's operations - answerable to the Executive Committee and the Trustees
Person Specification
Essential
Reliable and trustworthy with excellent timekeeping
Physically able to perform light maintenance tasks and lift/move chairs
Good communication skills to report issues effectively
Respectful of the mosque environment and community
Able to work independently and use own initiative
Available for evening and weekend work, particularly Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings
Flexible and available to work increased hours during Ramadan and Muharram
Access to transport for collecting food supplies when required
Able to maintain accurate records of hours worked
Desirable
Previous caretaking or facilities management experience
Basic understanding of building maintenance
Knowledge of the local Muslim community and Islamic calendar
Experience working in a religious or community setting
Working Hours
Part-time position with flexible hours
Must include Friday evenings (approximately 8:00pm onwards)
Hall hire openings/closings as scheduled (typically 3 times per week)
Additional hours for events and regular premises checks
Significantly increased hours during Ramadan (approximately 30 days) and the first 10 nights of Muharram
Candidates must be able to commit to daily attendance during these key religious periods
All hours must be recorded for payroll purposes
Remuneration
30,784 per annum pro rata
(based on 40 hours per week full-time equivalent)
Hourly rate: 14.80 per hour
(30,784 ? 52 weeks ? 40 hours) - as per London Living Wage
Payment based on actual hours worked and recorded
Hours will vary throughout the year, with increased hours during Ramadan and Muharram

Qualifications
Proven experience in facilities management, cleaning, or maintenance roles is advantageous
Valid driving licence with a clean driving record
Excellent communication skills in English, both verbal and written
Strong customer service orientation with a friendly and professional demeanour
Good organisational skills with the ability to prioritise tasks effectively
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Physical fitness to perform manual tasks and stand for extended periods
