About the role:
To provide creative guidance and oversee the innovative and audience-focused design development of temporary exhibitions, permanent display, and other projects in the public areas of the Museum from team allocation and briefing to implementation. This will involve ensuring services are delivered in line with the Museum's vision and strategies, on schedule and within budget. Liaising closely with curators, interpretation managers, project managers and production staff, this role will act as an innovator, advisor and escalation point for the effective design and project management of these services.
Key areas of responsibility:

  • To lead and guide the integrated work of multidisciplinary design teams comprising 3D designers and architects, graphics designers, lighting designers and digital media designers as well as technical staff supervising their delivery progress, Report regularly to the Head of Design and Interpretation on the progress of project delivery.
  • To oversee the design development process and implementation of projects, from the initial stages of gallery layout and visualising concepts, through to developing schemes, detailing and drawing up specifications for contractors.
  • To plan resources/allocations for the design teams, manage the work of the Department's internal designers and line manage the 3D designers.
  • To maintain a current list of creative external designers and consultants and a pool of available freelancers for engagement on specific projects when required.
  • To oversee the process for the procurement of external design services (3D, 2D, lighting and digital media), in line with the Museum's processes and procedures.
About you:
  • Degree in 3D Design
  • High level of creative ability demonstratable through portfolios and qualifications, utilising Vectorworks and 3D visualization software to clearly develop and communicate concepts.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, Vectorworks, Sketchup/Rhino, and other design visualisation
  • Skilled planner, with an ability to prioritise and manage oversight of several projects at once.
  • Strong and persuasive collaborator able to work successfully as part of multi-disciplinary project teams
