The Head of Digital leads on digital experience across the National Portrait Gallery. Reporting to the Director of Audiences, the post holder manages the Digital team and strategy for web and product development, CRM, content, AV, collections management and digital engagement, collaborating proactively with a wide variety of stakeholders across the organisation.
The successful candidate will possess demonstrable experience of leadership of digital delivery, digital products, web development and content creation. They will have extensive understanding of relevant technologies and practices, including an awareness of the latest technological developments, an understanding of product development and life cycle management, with the ability to act as a specialist and advisor to the organisation.
A creative individual, they will be able to apply their technical expertise with imagination to implement and evaluate digital campaigns and content using highly developed project management skills that deliver projects on time and in budget. Exceptional communication skills are required to lead and inspire a team to maximise individual and collective potential in addition to prior experience of liaising with senior stakeholders such as Executive teams and Trustees.

Key Accountabilities:
The Head of Digital, together with the Director of Audiences, will provide strategic leadership in the development and application of digital technology to advance the Gallery's goals and create engaging experiences for in-person and remote audiences.
Lead the Digital team and strategy for web and product development, CRM, AV, production, content, collections management and digital engagement, collaborating with a wide variety of stakeholders across the organisation and externally.
Spearhead digital transformation and innovation at the Gallery, working to integrate emerging and leading-edge technology and data, to shape and implement our digital vision and contribute substantially to the organisation's awareness of current thinking and best practice
Oversee the development of public-facing digital products, content, services and interpretation at the Gallery
Drive impact, traffic and revenues through continuous evaluation and improvement of product design, content and functionality
Lead on sourcing, developing and managing partnerships to support the Gallery's digital strategy working closely with the Development Team
Oversee CRM Strategy for the Gallery working with the CRM Managers to design end to end customer journeys and optimise data collection, improve customer service and maximise income generation
Work with teams across the Gallery including Communications, Exhibitions, Learning and Curatorial to create engaging multimedia content. Liaise closely with the Communications Team to develop content strategies and co-ordinate content across multiple NPG channels.
Increase and improve digital access to the collection online
Collaborate with the curatorial team on research and innovation projects in the digital space, including active engagement with the Research Advisory Panel
Oversee AV provision including supporting the public programme and events
Lead on digital customer experience across all touchpoints, ensuring successful user journeys both online and onsite
Ensure that the Gallery's brand is effectively realised in the digital space
Promoting sustainable working practices and reducing the environmental impact of the Gallery's operations in line with its Sustainability
Work with the Head of IT on the Gallery's cyber security strategy and implementation

Key Experience, Skills and Criteria:
Educated to degree standard or equivalent, or at least 5 years' experience at a management level
Excellent working knowledge and experience of leading digital delivery including digital products, web development and content creation
An extensive understanding of relevant technologies and practices (e.g. the latest technologies and platforms and software engineering processes) and cyber security best practice
Advanced team management skills and ability to deliver results through leading, developing and empowering multidisciplinary teams
Up-to-date knowledge of innovative digital technologies and an understanding of how these can be used to enhance museum and gallery experiences and operations
Experience of working at a senior level in an organisation and liaising with Executive teams and Trustees
Understanding of product development and product life-cycle management, including ideally agile methodology
Ability to manage contractors and agencies to deliver complex digital products
Knowledge of the funding landscape for digital development and experience of working closely with sponsors, partners and fundraising colleagues
Experience of leading on database and CRM strategies and familiarity with Tessitura or similar CRM/Ticketing system and collections management databases
Experience of overseeing website development with Drupal 8 or similar open-source content management system
Demonstrated understanding of the requirements for delivering high-quality AV experiences across a range of formats, including online, hybrid, and live-streamed events, interpretation and broader organisational needs
