Purpose of the role:
The Head of Engineering will lead all engineering and technical aspects of the company's Food waste AD operations. Responsibility for establishing engineering standards across group with effective deployment of engineering team to manage the preventative maintenance plan along with timely response to reactive engineering solutions. They will work closely with the Group Projects Manager overseeing the design, development, implementation and optimisation of AD plant infrastructure and equipment. They will provide technical leadership to mechanical, electrical, civil and process engineering teams.
Key areas of responsibility
Engineering Strategy & Leadership
Develop and implement the overall engineering strategy for current operations and future AD plant developments.
Provide technical leadership to mechanical, electrical, civil, and process engineering teams.
Align engineering efforts with company objectives on energy output, sustainability, and regulatory compliance.
Ensure stock levels are maintained to a reasonable economic level; that common failure parts are available by identifying spares required with upcoming issues forecasted effectively
Project Development & Delivery
Assist Group Projects Manager in design and engineering of new AD plants and major retrofit or expansion projects.
Oversee front-end engineering design (FEED), detailed engineering, and commissioning phases.
Coordinate with EPC contractors, consultants, and Group Project Manager to ensure timely, cost-effective delivery.
Technical Standards & Compliance
Establish engineering standards, design specifications, and quality control procedures across all sites utilising engineering software system; timely and with accuracy
Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, and industry regulations (e.g., ATEX, DSEAR, UK EA permitting, etc.).
Drive the adoption of innovative technologies and continuous improvement in plant performance.
Follow company procedures
Operational Support
Provide technical oversight for troubleshooting complex plant issues, process inefficiencies, or equipment failures.
Collaborate with Operations, Commercial and Compliance teams to optimise plant uptime, biogas yield, and cost-efficiency.
Lead root cause analysis and implement engineering solutions to recurring or high-risk issues.
Budget & Asset Management
Prepare and manage engineering budgets for capital projects and long-term asset replacement plans.
Ensure cost-effective engineering design while maintaining technical performance and reliability.
Team Development & Leadership
Build, lead, and mentor a high-performing team of engineers and field engineers
Define career development paths and provide training and performance feedback.
Individual Competency & role requirements
Technical expertise
Degree in Mechanical, Process, Chemical, or Environmental Engineering (Master's preferred).
Chartered Engineer status (CEng) or equivalent is desirable.
5+ years' engineering experience, including at least 2 years in anaerobic digestion, biogas, wastewater treatment, or a related field.
Proven experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams.
Deep understanding of AD process design, CHP systems, gas upgrading, feedstock pre-treatment, and digestate handling.
Strong knowledge of industry codes, safety standards (ATEX/DSEAR), and environmental compliance requirements.
Strong knowledge with diagnostic tools and equipment
Ability to read and interpret schematics and blueprints
Experience of use of industry specific software (AutoCAD, Scada, Shire)
High level of computer literacy - proficient use of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Outlook, Sharepoint)
IOSH/NEBOSH certificate

Manage multiple assignments across different sites
Experience with project management methodologies and engineering tools (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, PI, SCADA).
Strong commercial awareness and ability to evaluate ROI on engineering investments.
Ability to prioritise tasks under pressure
Ability to manage time effectively, self motivated
Adaptability;
Flexibility to work in varying environments (weather, remote locations)
Willingness to work longer hours, weekends, with regular travel to different sites - with ability to claim TOIL
Valid drivers licence and ability to travel
Flexible working location, with requirement to be able to travel to the AD sites located in East Yorkshire, Gainsborough, and Cambridgeshire as business needs dictate
Monday to Friday, 42 hours + on call rota + additional needs as the business dictates
