Are you a software engineering leader looking for your next opportunity? Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity is hiring for a Head of Engineering. This is a key role in shaping the future of our entire Technology directorate.

Salary



The salary for this position is 89,500 per annum and we operate a hybrid working policy of a minimum of 2 days per week in the office.

In line with our EDI strategy and Total Reward policy, we calculate our salaries based on benchmarking data across the charity sector. To ensure fairness for existing staff and new joiners, we do not offer salaries above the advertised rate.
Key Responsibilities


Own the engineering vision and standards for digital products

-- setting approved tooling, languages, delivery methodology and contributing to / owning elements of the GOSH Technology Code of Practice.


Partner with and provide challenge to the CTO to shape and steer the full Technology portfolio

-- collaborating on strategy and investment decisions across data platforms, digital products and emerging AI capabilities, and providing hands-on input to ensure each initiative is secure, user-centred and aligned with the charity's strategic goals.


Flex between strategic oversight and hands-on engineering

-- jumping into code reviews, pairing sessions or critical pull-requests when needed to unblock teams, supporting infrastructure needs and modelling best practice on high-priority digital projects.


Champion technology innovation

-- continuously evaluate emerging tools, frameworks, practices and AI trends, and recommend pragmatic pilots that enhance supporter experiences, strengthen security and advance the charity's modern, user-focused technology vision.


Provide expert technical guidance and discovery facilitation

for teams and project across the charity and hospital (where required), supporting informed technology choices organisation-wide, leading to high quality end to end digital solutions.


Lead and coach relevant people across the Technology Directorate,

fostering an inclusive, high-performance culture and agreeing outcome-driven development goals with the CTO.


Alongside the CTO, communicate digital and engineering progress clearly to stakeholders

across the charity and hospital, turning technical updates into outcomes and impact, explaining decisions and enhancing GOSH Charity's reputation as an area of technical excellence.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise


Experience running a successful digital development/delivery team Experience working in Agile (Scrum) environment Experience working with business stakeholders and other product owners to provide technical expertise Prior experience of founding/developing digital development processes & policies Practical knowledge & understanding of development methodologies, best practice and tools (TDD, BDD, JIRA, design patterns, coding standards etc.) Knowledge of CI/CD and Release Management best practice Proficient knowledge of automated testing principles Knowledge of DevOps and deployment software/principles (AWS etc.) Proven ability to successfully manage multiple workstreams and projects concurrently; expert in prioritising and addressing scheduling conflicts effectively Excellent verbal and written communication skills Hands on approach; happy to be flexible in role working within a small team Proven ability to effectively manage and engage stakeholders at all levels of seniority
