Head Of It

Oxford, United Kingdom

Job Description

Denys Wilkinson Building - Robert Hooke Building, Oxford
We are seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Head of IT to lead our Information Technology function and shape the organisation's digital strategy.
The Head of IT will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of IT operations, infrastructure, systems, and cybersecurity-ensuring that our technology supports business goals and drives innovation. The postholder will provide comprehensive IT services to support academics, staff, students, and visitors across the Department, while managing the institution's computer systems and network infrastructure.
This role requires adaptability to the rapid evolution of both hardware and software technologies, alongside the growing and diverse needs of our user community. Given the dynamic nature of the IT landscape, the responsibilities of this position will continue to evolve. A flexible approach to working is essential, particularly during critical periods such as peak academic times, system upgrades, and emergency support needs.
Reporting to the Head of Administration, you will work closely with the Department's academic leadership team and will also be a member of the Physics Operations Team, which brings together the Department's functional leads.
You will be educated to at least degree level (or equivalent) and will have substantial management experience within an academic environment, including leading a service or support function of significant size. An excellent general understanding of underlying technologies is essential to maintain credibility among academics-many of whom are advancing the frontiers of information science. Highly developed technical expertise would be an advantage.
You will be an experienced and innovative leader, responsible for delivering high-quality and responsive support. You will demonstrate sound judgement under pressure, an ability to think laterally and creatively, and the intellectual capacity and strength of character to make and implement important, complex, and sometimes difficult decisions.
This is a permanent post.
Only applications received before midday Friday, 28 November 2025 can be considered.
The selection process will consist of two interview stages, planned as follows:

  • Part one: Week commencing 8 December 2025
  • Part two: Wednesday, 17 December 2025
Please indicate your availability through the application form.
