Start: January 2024

Location: Hammersmith and Fulham

Salary: \xc2\xa340,000 \xe2\x80\x93 \xc2\xa350,000 (dependent on candidate experience)

Our client, an independent through school nestled in the heart of Hammersmith and Fulham and affiliated with a global network of prestigious independent schools, is in search of a Head of Science to join their team from January 2024. While the school offers independent, co-educational education for students from Reception onwards, this position specifically involves leading the Science Department within the Senior section of the school.

Currently, the Head of Science oversees the biology department and provides guidance to two department members who specialise in teaching physics and chemistry. Therefore, the incoming Head of Science will assume this role. This role also entails a close partnership with the Head of Science at the Prep School, responsible for science education from Year 3 to Year 8. The school\xe2\x80\x99s curriculum is thoughtfully designed to prepare students for GCSE, BTEC, and A Levels.

Some key responsibilities of the role include:

Leadership:

  • Take an active role within pivotal academic teams, influencing the direction of teaching and learning at the school.
  • Lead a team of science educators and technicians, providing necessary line management.
  • Oversee the Science department\xe2\x80\x99s budget management.
  • Maintain essential departmental documents, including the department handbook.
  • Efficiently manage and preserve departmental resources.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of students during science laboratory work and related activities.
Teaching & Learning:
  • Assume a prominent role as a subject leader, setting the standard as a teaching practitioner, and serving as a model for excellence and innovation. Contribute to learning assessments and evaluations across the school.
  • Foster a culture of excellence in teaching and learning, ensuring all students reach their full potential and are prepared for life beyond school.
  • Demonstrate exemplary teaching and learning skills, aligning with best practices of leading professionals and promoting the dissemination of these practices within the department.
  • Monitor students\xe2\x80\x99 progress and classroom practices within the department to maintain high teaching and learning standards.
  • Ensure the department\xe2\x80\x99s curriculum delivery and development effectively meet the needs of all students.
  • Contribute to the broader educational experiences of the school by supporting and leading various curricular and co-curricular events such as field trips, competitions, and activity days.
The Ideal Candidate Will Possess:
  • A proven track record of teaching Biology at KS3, KS4, and KS5. A knowledge of physics and chemistry teaching in order to line manage these departments.
  • Demonstrable passion and expertise in the subject area.
  • Experience in preparing students for external assessments.
  • A background in pastoral care and student well-being.
  • Proficiency in integrating ICT into teaching.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, capable of collaborative and independent work.
  • Outstanding organisational and administrative abilities, including effective planning, prioritisation, and workload management.
  • The ability to set clear expectations and ambitious goals.
  • An adaptable teaching style that incorporates feedback.
  • A sincere commitment to maintaining the highest standards of student welfare.
  • A university degree in a Science-related discipline.
