Head of Sustainability & Regenerative Design

Haworth Tompkins is an award winning, design led architecture studio working across a variety of scales and sectors including housing, education, theatre, arts and heritage. We are looking for an experienced candidate to continue to lead the practice s sustainability and regenerative design strategy. Regenerative design uses whole systems thinking to create resilient systems that integrate the needs of society with the integrity of nature. Regenerative processes are participatory, iterative, equitable and individual to the specific community and environment.

The successful candidate will focus on further progressing our vision and strategy for regenerative design and practice including: the professional development of staff; developing and reporting on sustainability design metrics; maintaining sustainability resources; and reducing the environmental impact of practice operations. Working closely with the Leadership team and the S&R Working Group, the successful candidate will:

PRACTICE-WIDE

  • Develop and implement policies and guidance to support key sustainability and regenerative design topics including energy use & generation, embodied carbon, waste & resources, sustainable transport, water use and quality, pollution, land use, ecology & biodiversity and health & wellbeing.
  • Develop and present educational materials around a wide range of sustainability and regenerative design topics within the studio, clients and the wider industry.
  • Stay up to date with changing legislation and industry research related to sustainability and regenerative design
  • Serve as a knowledge resource for the studio, providing or bringing in expert advice around a variety of sustainability and regenerative design topics.
  • Work to reduce the environmental impact and improve the regenerative potential of Haworth Tompkins own operations.
  • Work with the S&R Working Group to develop, implement and integrate the practice s overarching S&R Strategy.
  • Contribute to annual B-corp reporting.
  • Participate in and initiate advocacy of regenerative design within the wider construction industry.
PROJECT-WIDE
  • Assist with the environmental assessment of project work including third party documentation and performance analysis for projects of a variety of types and sizes.
  • Support the design teams to produce and apply high-performance design strategies and systems integration in support of sustainable and regenerative design.
  • Produce effective illustrative assessments of project sustainability and regenerative design criteria for reporting and presenting to clients, public authorities, directors and consultants.
  • Assist with marketing pursuits and participate in client interviews with regards to sustainability and regenerative design.
  • Undertake regular reviews of projects performance and develop reporting tools and templates to integrate with annual B-corp reporting and assessments.
ATTRIBUTES
  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Sustainability, Architecture, Interior Design, Urban Planning or related field.
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years experience in sustainability and regenerative design
  • Sustainability certification and accreditation preferred but not essential.
  • Extensive knowledge of sustainable and regenerative design strategies including material selection and technologies
  • Ability to work independently and on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Strong written, verbal and social communication skills, with the ability to present in front of large groups.
  • Intellectual curiosity, eagerness to engage with others and willingness to contribute.
  • Experience with performance analysis is preferred, but not required and training can be provided.
