Job Purpose



To provide competent and professional HSE support to the organisation by advising on all matters related to health, safety and environmental compliance. This includes helping ensure that the workplace meets legislative requirements and fostering a proactive safety culture throughout all levels of the business.

Key Responsibilities



Support the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) policies, procedures, and management systems in line with legal and organisational requirements. Conduct regular site inspections, audits, and risk assessments to ensure compliance with applicable health, safety, and environmental legislation, standards, and company procedures. Identify hazards and assess risks, providing practical, proportionate advice on mitigation and control measures in accordance with the hierarchy of controls. Lead or support investigations into accidents, incidents, and near misses, including conducting root cause analysis and producing formal reports with recommendations for corrective actions. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant HSE legislation, standards, and industry best practices, and advise management accordingly. Deliver HSE inductions and training sessions for employees, contractors, and visitors to ensure understanding of site rules, emergency procedures, and safe systems of work. Ensure appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is identified, issued, and used correctly, and that its selection aligns with the nature of work activities and risk assessments. Liaise with regulatory bodies and external stakeholders, such as the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), environmental agencies, auditors, and other relevant authorities when required. Monitor environmental performance on-site, identifying opportunities for improvement and contributing to the organisation's sustainability and environmental objectives. Compile and submit HSE performance reports to senior management, including key performance indicators (KPIs), trends, and recommendations for action.

Essential Qualifications and Experience



NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety, or an equivalent Level 3 qualification in health and safety. A minimum of two years' experience in a comparable Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) role, ideally within a dynamic or operational environment. Sound working knowledge of current UK health, safety, and environmental legislation, regulations, and best practice guidance. Proven experience in conducting risk assessments and leading or supporting incident investigations to identify root causes and implement corrective actions. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage, influence, and challenge stakeholders at all levels to promote a positive safety culture.

Desirable Criteria



Professional Membership - Current membership of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), at Technical (Tech IOSH) grade or higher. Management Systems Experience - Practical experience in implementing, maintaining, or auditing ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management Systems). Environmental Qualification - Possession of a relevant environmental qualification, such as the IEMA Certificate in Environmental Management or equivalent. Industry-Specific Knowledge - Prior experience within a relevant operational environment, ideally involving automated systems in warehousing, logistics, or industrial settings. NEBOSH Certificate in Construction Health and Safety, or equivalent construction-specific H&S qualification. CDM exposure - Working knowledge or demonstrable exposure to the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM 2015) and their application in project environments.
