Main duties of the job
The Healthcare Assistant will support the safe and efficient running of the Day Surgery Unit and Walk in Walk out area by assisting with patient admissions, preparing rooms and documentation, performing routine observations, and carrying out basic clinical tasks such as urinalysis, pregnancy testing, ECGs, venepuncture, and simple wound dressings once competent. The role involves helping patients prepare for theatre, supporting them post procedure, escorting them safely to and from departments, acting as a chaperone during examinations, and maintaining accurate patient records. The post holder will contribute to the smooth daily operation of the unit by managing stock levels, maintaining clean and organised clinical areas, supporting electronic systems for patient registration and charging, and coordinating appointments under the guidance of nursing staff. A strong focus on safety, infection control, confidentiality, and professional communication is essential, along with the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team in a fast paced environment.
