We are proudly introducing two new Gastroenterology/Colorectal, 28 bedded wards at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, due to open at the end of this year. There are several permanent Health Care Assistant (HCA) positions that need to be filled to support these new modular wards.
You could be new to care or an experienced care worker... we are keen to talk to you about opportunities here as a HCA on our inpatient wards, supporting our registered nursing staff to provide excellent care to our patients.
We will offer you the required skills and training needed to care for the patients, along with the opportunity to learn from experienced members of the current Surgical Wards as they transition into their new surroundings.
We provide care 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, so you will need to have the flexibility to work days, weekend and night shifts including bank holidays.

**Interviews for these positions will be held in person, on site at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital as part of our recruitment event on Saturday 4th October 2025. *There will be no option of a digital/electronic interview.**
Main duties of the job

  • Working flexibly alongside registered nurses as part of the Ward team delivering exceptional care.
  • Acting with compassion you will put patients at the centre of all you do.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and their carers.
  • Serving meals and helping to feed patients.
  • Monitoring patients and provide support to them, performing basic health checks and maintaining their hygiene needs. Including some of the following duties:
  • Bed-making
  • Recording temperature, pulse & weight
  • Bathing/washing
  • Care of mouth, hair, nails and eyes
  • Emptying urinary catheter bags
  • Mobilising to toilet or use of commode or bedpan
  • Maintaining hygiene needs after episodes of incontinence
  • Show courage by embracing new ways of working and doing the right thing by the people you care for, including speaking up when you have concerns.

  • GCSE in Maths and English grade 3-1 ( D-G) Functional Skills L1 or higher
Desirable
  • GCSE in Maths and English grade 9-4 ( A - C) Functional Skills L2 or higher
  • Level 2 Diploma in clinical Healthcare support NVQ Level 2 in Care or demonstrate a commitment to work towards the diploma qualification
Experience
Essential
  • Can demonstrate an understanding, through personal statement and interview, of what is required within the role of a Health Care Assistant in the care setting
  • Can describe the Trust Values and demonstrate how they put these in to practice within their caring role
Desirable
  • Previous hospital experience
