Well experienced Orthoptist with keen interest and experience in clinical education. Leading and Developing the service across Buckinghamshire.
Main duties of the job

  • An autonomous practitioner to be legally and professionally responsible for patient assessment and diagnosis and the formulation and conduction of treatment programmes for a full range of orthoptic cases including inpatient and outpatient care, paediatrics including special needs (e.g. Downs Syndrome, Aspergers Syndrome etc), adults including stroke and spinal injury patients. The post- holder will be the Lead Orthoptistand clinical tutor and have Highly Specialist knowledge and experience in all clinical aspects of Orthoptics and knowledge of the current Orthoptic, Optometry and Specialist trainee education needs
  • To aid Ophthalmologists in other speciality clinics which are recognised by BIOS as extended role - within the post holders chosen remit after sufficient training
  • Patients may have very complex medical problems requiring a high level of neurological and medical understanding and accurate analysis and documentation of clinical findings, and the postholder needs to be able to manage the case effectively and to influence ophthalmic management.
  • He or she will be responsible for planning, implementing and monitoring individual treatment plans and care pathways for patients of all ages, using advanced clinical reasoning and evidence -based practice, ensuring all patients achieve their maximum functional ability with reduced symptoms.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING
Essential
  • DBO, BSc (hons) Orthoptics, or BMed Sci Orthoptics
  • To be registered with the Health Professions Council.
  • Evidence of Continued Professional Development
  • Information Technology skills (including use of excel for producing statistical analysis
  • BIOS accredited post graduate training in VPD
  • Membership of CLINICAL TUTORS CAG and demonstrate participation.
EXPERIENCE
Essential
  • undergraduate orthoptic clinical experience and excellent years of post graduation experience in all aspects of clinical Orthoptics involving paediatrics, neurology, stroke patients and community as well as specialist services
  • Experience of Clinical teaching. Clinical audit experience. Research experience
Desirable
  • Evidence of active participation in departmental teaching programmes.
SKILLS, ABILITIES & KNOWLEDGE
Essential
  • Information Technology skills (including use of excel for producing statistical analysis
  • Ability to deal with own highly complex workload and work unsupervised
  • Ability to assess, diagnose and treat full range of Orthoptic cases
  • Ability to manage and take responsibility for own workload and provide clinical supervision to junior members of staff
  • Ability to conduct visual fields using Humphrey Field analyser. ? Extensive knowledge of conditions post stroke
  • Excellent communication skills, to be able to communicate using a range of verbal and or non -verbal techniques e.g. Makaton sign language
  • To be able to verbally communicate complex clinical information in an effective and efficient manner to other professional colleagues.
  • Ability to write complex clinical reports
