Job Summary

Shallion Support is seeking compassionate and reliable Volunteer Home Support Workers to provide non-medical, home-based support to individuals living with a chronic illness such as M.E., Fibromyalgia, Long Covid and PTSD. This role focuses on offering practical help and human connection to support clients in managing everyday tasks that can become overwhelming due to illness-related fatigue. You will

not

be providing personal care or medical support. Instead, you will support clients in keeping parts of daily life running when illness and fatigue make ordinary tasks hard to manage. This volunteer position is ideal for students or individuals looking to make a meaningful contribution to their community while gaining valuable experience.

Duties

Provide practical, non-medical support with everyday household tasks such as light housekeeping, organising spaces, or laundry.
Support collaborative meal planning and food preparation, including baking where appropriate, in a way that is sensitive to fatigue.
Assist with managing appointments, paperwork, emails, or basic IT tasks.
Offer companionship and conversation to help reduce isolation and loneliness.
Support clients with tasks they are temporarily unable to manage due to fluctuating health.
Accompany clients to essential appointments or errands when required.
Assist with pet care where appropriate.
Work respectfully within each client's boundaries, routines, and energy levels.
Build consistent, trusting relationships through reliable and thoughtful support.

Skills

A compassionate, patient, and respectful approach to supporting others.
Strong communication and listening skills.
Reliability and the ability to work independently once matched with a client.
Willingness to learn about chronic illness, fatigue, and fluctuating conditions.
No medical, personal care, or caregiving experience required.
Ability to carry out light household tasks (no heavy lifting or personal care involved).
Organised and considerate, with attention to individual preferences.
Driving licence helpful but not essential.
PVG check required.
