Job Description


Wates are looking for a HR Business Partner to join our Residential team focusing on the Cardiff area. Wates Residential is a developer contractor which means we invest, we develop, we build and sell quality affordable housing, either contracting or in a form of partnership with Local Authorities, Housing Associations, and public bodies. The Residential objective is to become a leading provider of affordable housing in London, the South and Wales. We will experience significant increase in scale over the next 4 years. In 2024 the Wales region in particular will grow significantly.

About the Role:

The HR BP will ensure that our people managers understand, value and consistently apply, the relevant rules and processes whether, recruiting, promoting, inducting, performance managing, or developing their teams This role will have dotted line reporting into the Regional Managing Director for Wales and will be a member of the Wales regional board.

Additionally you will:

Be focussed on supporting business growth and on implementing the Wates Group Diversity and inclusion strategy.

  • Support Residential Talent management and succession planning, (including oversight of our trainees), resource planning and skills development will also be key elements of our HR plans
  • Support the Regional Managing Director in developing the leadership team and people managers to be able to successfully lead a business of scale.
About you:
  • You will have a proven track record in business partnering and building strong working relationships at a leadership level. This role requires someone with the confidence and integrity to both support stakeholders, and where required to respectfully challenge and hold them to account.
  • Comfortable in project managing HR action plans to support business strategy.
  • Experienced in supporting Group HR centres of excellence and delivering annual activity such as salary review, appraisals, and training needs analysis.
  • A Strong and effective communicator, capable of building relationships across the business through problem solving, establishing trust, and demonstrating understanding of business challenges and opportunities.
  • You will have strong generalist knowledge ideally complimented by CIPD membership.
Whilst there will be a great deal of flexibility on work location, to be successful you will need to be visible, and therefore regular travel to meet stakeholders on projects and or in offices will be very important. You will need to in the Cardiff office or visiting teams on one of our projects on average around two days a week.

Some monthly travel to London and Leatherhead (HQ) will be also required to build a strong relationship with Residential HR colleagues and the Wates HR team
