We are a specialist SEND college seeking an experienced and compassionate HR Manager to lead and develop our HR function. This is a part-time, on-site role, ideal for someone who wants to make a real difference to the lives of young people with special educational needs and disabilities by supporting the staff who work with them every day.
You will be the college's HR professional, providing proactive, hands-on HR support to leaders, managers and staff across the organisation.
Key Responsibilities
HR Leadership & Strategy
Lead the day-to-day HR function, ensuring it is efficient, compliant and aligned with the college's vision and values.
Advise senior leaders on HR matters, workforce planning and organisational development.
Develop and review HR policies and procedures in line with current employment law and education sector guidance.
Recruitment & Onboarding
Manage end-to-end recruitment for teaching, therapy, support and specialist roles, ensuring safer recruitment practices at all times.
Draft and place job adverts, coordinate shortlisting and interviews, and issue offers and contracts.
Oversee pre-employment checks (references, DBS, right to work, etc.) and ensure a smooth onboarding and induction process.
Employee Relations
Provide professional advice and support to managers on a wide range of employee relations issues (e.g. conduct, performance, grievance).
Support and, where appropriate, lead casework, ensuring processes are fair, timely and in line with policy and legislation.
Build positive, trusting relationships with staff, acting as an approachable and confidential point of contact.
HR Operations & Compliance
Maintain accurate and secure HR records and personnel files.
Oversee HR data, reporting and KPIs (e.g. absence, turnover, recruitment metrics).
Ensure compliance with employment law, safer recruitment requirements and relevant education/charity legislation.
Support the administration of payroll-related data (e.g. starters, leavers, contractual changes, absence).
Learning, Development & Wellbeing
Support leaders to identify training and development needs and coordinate CPD activities.
Contribute to initiatives that promote staff wellbeing, retention and a positive staff culture.
Help embed the college's values and commitment to inclusion and equality in all HR processes.
Person Specification
Essential
CIPD qualification (Level 5 or above) or equivalent experience in a generalist HR role.
Strong knowledge of UK employment law and HR best practice.
Experience of managing HR casework (e.g. disciplinary, grievance, performance, absence).
Confident in advising and influencing managers at all levels.
Excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills.
High level of integrity, professionalism and discretion, with a commitment to confidentiality.
Ability to work independently, manage a varied workload and meet deadlines.
Strong IT skills and experience using HR and/or MIS systems.
Desirable
Experience working in education, SEND, charity sector settings.
Experience of safer recruitment and DBS processes.
Experience supporting wellbeing, EDI and culture initiatives.
Working Pattern
20-25 hours per week, worked across Monday-Friday, with a required on-site start time of 08:30am each day.
