As a Technical Documentation Engineer (within the Manufacturing Engineering Team) based at the High Temperature Research Centre (HTRC) in Ansty, you will conduct research and improvement activities related to the design and manufacture of turbine components. The HTRC is a collaboration between the University of Birmingham and Rolls-Royce and is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment for investment casting, machining, and advanced metrology of single crystal components.
The Centre has three key aims:
You will work within our co-located design and manufacturing engineering teams at the HTRC and in close collaboration with a wide range of researchers from the relevant academic fields.
Manufacturing engineers are responsible for the method of manufacture that delivers component requirements and support both process engineering and project delivery tasks. Whilst an engineer may have a particular process or project focus, they will be able to support both functions.
This role provides support to the process engineering team, and wider teams at the HTRC, in Technical writing. This will include (but not limited to)
Generation and update of Technical Instruction
Archiving of fixed process documentation
Generation and update of Training Packs
Generation and update of Engineering Work Instructions
Equipment Blue Folder Handover documentation.
Any other documents as deemed necessary.
The role holder will also conduct trials through the HTRC, with support of the Process and Project teams, by following the HTRC trial process.
You will:
Be degree qualified or demonstrate equivalent technical capability based on practical knowledge and experience
Have sound understanding of manufacturing engineering and component engineering principles
Ideally demonstrate technical knowledge of turbine components and/or process knowledge associated with investment casting and/or machining of turbine components
Be equipped with a strong functional skill set (problem solving, programme management, change control, risk management and budgetary control).
A high attention to detail is a must for the successful creation and maintenance of Technical Documentation.
Candidates with experience in some of the following will be strongly positioned to perform this role:
Experience working in research environments
Created and managed experiments to understand and develop manufacturing and component capability,
Created and managed methods of manufacture and technical packages allowing component manufacture and delivery.
Knowledge of inspection requirements and experience developing inspection capabilities
Resolved non-conformance to ensure an in-spec product is delivered to the customer.
Acted to continuously improve current and developed novel manufacturing capability for turbine component manufacture
Influenced the creation and deployment of future manufacturing capability roadmaps to ensure world class processes are operated.
Understood equipment requirements, developed equipment capability
Ensured stability and reliability of process equipment and process methods
Developed and coached Technicians in manufacturing processes.
Benchmarked external capability
The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) was established in 2010 as an independent Research & Technology Organisation (RTO) with the objective of bridging the gap between academia and industry - often referred to as 'the valley of death'.
It represents one of the largest public sector investments in UK manufacturing and, after four years of planning and a 16 month build, the facility opened at Ansty Park in Coventry at the end of 2011.
In December 2011, there were 16 industrial members, 44 staff and just a few key pieces of equipment in the 'workshop'.
Over the following seven years the MTC's rapid growth has seen the expansion of our campus with the construction of three more facilities, including the opening of the Advanced Manufacturing Training Centre and the National Centre for Additive Manufacturing.
Our role has also increased to cover not only R&D but also Training, Advanced Manufacturing Management and Factory Design.
We now have over 700 talented employees working with us.
During this time we have helped hundreds of companies across a range of industries and over 100 of them have become members of the MTC.
